Can't continue in career mode

I've started a career mode for the very first time and promoted a few players from the youth to the senior team. Now I can't continue, because my youth team doesn't have enough field players available... My scouts won't begin searching and I can't demote players from the senior squad, neither can Input the promoted players back, or contract a new youth player from the transfer market.
