Players out of position / formation

I understand the concept of the tactics within team management. However I can’t understand, with all the customisation why you can only use the preset formations. For example, I want a 451 formation with a midfield of a LAM, CAM, RM, CM and CDM but it doesn’t seem this is possible. I get that I can assign different roles to all of these players but I have to either have LM/RM or LAM/RAM so some players are showing as out of position and therefore losing their rating. Unless I’m missing something this seems a bit stupid.
