FC 27 Ultimate Team – Detailed Gameplay Feedback After 100+ Hours

I would like to provide detailed and constructive feedback about EA SPORTS FC 27 Ultimate Team after more than 100 hours of play.

I purchased the Ultimate Edition primarily because I expected to spend a lot of time playing Ultimate Team. Despite the problems I experienced, I continued playing because I genuinely tried to adapt to the game and hoped that updates would improve the experience.

Unfortunately, after more than 100 hours, many of the fundamental issues that frustrate me are still present.

Inconsistent Gameplay

One of my biggest concerns is the inconsistency of the gameplay.

In some matches, players respond quickly, controls feel precise, passing works as expected and the overall gameplay feels smooth.

In other matches, the same players can suddenly feel heavy, slow and delayed. They turn more slowly, actions seem to register later and the entire match can feel completely different despite using the same team and settings.

In a competitive game, this level of inconsistency should not be normal. Players should be able to trust that similar inputs in similar situations will produce reasonably consistent results.

Rebounds and the Feeling of Ball “Magnetism”

The behaviour of the ball can also feel extremely strange at times.

You make a successful tackle — the ball goes back to the opponent.

You intercept a pass — it bounces to another opposing player.

You block a shot or pass — the opponent is immediately first to the loose ball again.

Sometimes it can even feel as though the ball is being “magnetised” towards the opponent before they have properly touched it.

I am not claiming to know what technically causes this behaviour. I am describing how these situations repeatedly feel during gameplay.

When a player successfully defends two or three times during the same attack but the ball repeatedly returns to the opponent, successful defending stops feeling properly rewarded.

Defending

Defensive positioning and reactions can also feel too unpredictable.

A player can correctly anticipate an attack, select the appropriate defender and cover the correct space, yet defenders do not always react reliably to attacking runs or the trajectory of the ball.

This becomes particularly noticeable against long and lofted passes.

Sometimes FC 27 Feels More Like Volleyball Than Football

This is one of my biggest issues with the current gameplay.

Too many online attacks can become:

Lofted pass → another long ball → ball over the defensive line → striker between the defenders → goal.

At times, Ultimate Team starts to feel more like volleyball with a football than actual football.

This significantly reduces the value of positional play.

Why patiently construct an attack, use short passing, move the defence, create space and look for intelligent combinations when simply launching a long or lofted ball towards a striker between or behind the defenders can often be more effective?

One pass can sometimes bypass an entire defensive structure.

Long passes are obviously part of real football and should absolutely be effective when used in the correct situation. The problem begins when repeatedly launching the ball over the defence becomes one of the most reliable ways to create chances.

Positional football needs to matter.

A football game should reward short passing, combinations through midfield, wing play, creating space, tactical thinking and patient build-up.

Understanding football should be at least as important as understanding which gameplay mechanic is currently the most effective to exploit.

Kick-Off Situations

The kick-off issue does not feel completely gone either.

After conceding a goal, there are still situations where the team taking kick-off can move through the defence far too easily.

Defensive positioning and reactions can sometimes feel different during these situations compared with normal open play.

This has been discussed in football games for years, which makes it particularly frustrating to still experience it.

Matchmaking

Matchmaking is another area that deserves attention.

Competitive modes should aim to create reasonably balanced matches between players of similar ability. Instead, the difference between opponents can sometimes feel enormous from one match to another.

I am not asking for easier opponents.

I do not want the game to help me win.

I want fair competition.

If my opponent is better, they deserve to win. Competitive modes should simply provide the best possible environment for results to be determined by the ability and decisions of the two players.

Technical and Visual Problems

There are also technical and visual issues that remain in the game.

Some are not game-breaking, but it is disappointing to see bugs remain for extended periods in a full-price game that receives a new release every year.

At the same time, Ultimate Team continuously receives new cards, packs, promotions and Store content.

That naturally raises the question of why fixing fundamental gameplay and technical issues can sometimes appear to receive less urgency than releasing new monetised content.

The Store Should Not Be More Important Than Football

I understand that Ultimate Team is a commercial product.

However, players are ultimately purchasing a football game.

The quality of the core gameplay, defending, ball behaviour, matchmaking, stability and player control should therefore be the highest priority.

New Store content should never feel more important than making the actual football experience reliable and enjoyable.

A Game Should Be Entertainment, Not Constant Stress

There is another aspect that I believe deserves more discussion: the experience this type of competitive gameplay creates for the player.

We pay money for games because they are supposed to provide entertainment.

However, when gameplay is extremely inconsistent and unpredictable, Ultimate Team can sometimes create more frustration, anger and stress than enjoyment.

There is something strange about paying our own money for entertainment that can end up damaging our mood and creating unnecessary stress.

Of course, every player is responsible for how much they play and when they stop. But competitive game design should also aim to provide a fair and healthy experience.

My Problem Is Not Losing

I want to make this very clear.

I have absolutely no problem losing to a better player.

If my opponent defends better, they deserve to win.

If they create better attacks, they deserve to win.

If they make better decisions, they deserve to win.

The problem begins when a match leaves you feeling that the result was influenced too heavily by strange rebounds, long-ball mechanics, defensive reactions, kick-off situations or other unpredictable gameplay behaviour.

At that point, it no longer feels like you are only playing against another player. It feels like you are also fighting the game itself.

That is why I am writing this after more than 100 hours.

If I had played for five hours, it would be reasonable to say that I simply had not learned the game. But I have spent more than 100 hours trying to adapt, learn the mechanics and give FC 27 a genuine chance.

I would therefore ask EA to seriously investigate:

gameplay consistency, defensive positioning and reactions, rebounds and ball behaviour, the effectiveness of long and lofted passes, the value of positional football, kick-off situations, matchmaking, and the overall quality of Ultimate Team gameplay.

I am not asking EA to promise that everything will be fixed tomorrow.

I am asking for these concerns to be acknowledged, seriously investigated and for the quality of the core football gameplay to be treated as a higher priority than constantly releasing new Store content.

We want to play football. We do not want to fight the game mechanics.

  • Very well said, this gameplay is the most broken, unrealistic and unfun I've ever experienced and I've played these games since the 90's.
