Fix H2H Matchmaking to Address Latency/Lag

EA:. PLEASE do something to fix H2H matchmaking to prevent ping rates above 50-60ms. I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that it’s incredibly annoying/demoralizing to regularly find myself in unwinnable matches (whether it’s Division Rivals H2H or other player v player modes) where my ping rate drops from the 22-24ms I normally enjoy to over 80ms simply because I’ve been matched with someone thousands of miles away who sits closer to the host server. I’d rather wait an extra minute in the matchmaking process in order to play a FAIR match against someone in my region instead of enduring the frustration of an insurmountable 60-80ms lag. Your developers need only play the game under these conditions to understand why this ruins the H2H experience (which ought to be the best part of any self-respecting football game!).

Including a screenshot of a H2H matchup I just had that was virtually unplayable and 100% unwinnable thanks to a ridiculously high ping. This is why I’m in here ranting. I’m playing on a 9th generation iPad sitting mere feet from my router on an internet connection that even during a congested period is still showing a 32ms ping. The problem is that EA’s matchmaking routinely triples or quadruples that ping because it matches opponents who are too far away from each other. The result is it RUINS the user experience. I wasn’t competing with this opponent—because the lag made that impossible! Instead, I was left fuming as my opponent repeatedly taunted me because his ping advantage allowed him to walk all over me. This is the opposite of fun and if EA doesn’t care about fun anymore then it ought to just pack up shop because it’s truly lost its way.

  • Two months on and H2H stills SUCKS, EA! Just absolutely miserable. Latency is a major issue in at least 2/3 of the H2H matches I play (including modes like Scouting Camp). I’m writing again because I suffered through at least six terrible H2H matches today and it is killing the fun. The lag means it’s no longer about the team I’ve built or my skill—it’s down to one user having an arbitrary advantage. Could you guys stop wasting your time recycling the stupid skill games and churning out more corny holiday-themed events long enough to fix this key aspect of the user experience (i.e. the persistent lag/latency that presumably stems from matching players who are at too great a distance from one another and, therefore, the EA server hosting the match)? It turns your product from something reasonably decent into something that makes me want to throw my device across the room and curse the day I ever heard of EA. You guys keep rolling out your surveys seeking feedback on this or event or that event, but it’s like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Fix this fundamental flaw at the heart of your app and make it fun—NOT FRUSTRATING AS HELL—to play!

dm me and I'll give you my discord server details, can run you through some troubleshooting stuff while we're both online. Doing it over forums will be challenging and probably a waste of time.

Yeah, I’m not holding my breath on a reply, but it’s such a fundamental aspect of the game that it really sticks in my craw, lol!

As best I can assess, my home network is solid. I read your post at the time, but admit a lot of it felt a little beyond my technical aptitude. Now I can’t seem to locate that thread. Suffice it to say I pay for reasonably robust connection via Comcast (my ISP) and my router is rated to handle the bandwidth. I generally sit in the same room with the router (about 10 ft away), so zero reason to think that there’s a problem with the signal. As I’ve reported, my ping usually registers in the low- to mid-20ms (except when I connect to a player vs player match), so that suggests to me that my connection generally good enough that, but for EA’s poor matchmaking algorithm, I have every reason to expect a decent gaming experience most of the time.

  • Since I've already covered this topic with you on the networks/internet side of things, I'm just going to grab some popcorn and wait for a response from EA staff. Given that it's mentioned daily by many people, it would be great to see an official post on the matter.

Btw, did you look at your network? any tips that I've shared helped with the general state of your Wifi? Just wondering.
