NEED to have CLICK CLOSEST TO BALL on Defense

OMG!!! I have played Madden since the Sega days and i am by NO Means a Top Player in H2H..BUT i can, or at least i COULD hold my own against some of the Top players in Online playing..Last year i had like a 1600-800 record..this year is only a couple weeks old and i cant even see my record, im probably along the lines of 35-150 and its 100% BECAUSE of the completly honest repitition of myself automatically "clicking" on a button that for over 30 years has been reliable to switch myself to the player closest to the ball..NOW when i click it switches me to a CB that i have now dragged off assignment and leaves his WR wide open for a TD..im not a quitter, i have been blown out by 50 points before but this game has gotten on my last nerve..pLEASE FIX THIS!!!

  • @RunTheGauntletJ I'm an old school Madden player too... Here are some tips if you're on PS5 or XBox...

Check your settings and make sure that the Switch Assist, Ball Hawk, and Defensive Assist are all turned ON. If you turn them off, clicking the O on PS5 or B on XBox might switch you to a player you aren't expecting to control...

If you find that the assists are already ON, then I'd recommend that you consciously take your thumb off the left stick as you "click on" the defender while the ball is in the air. You'll see exactly which defender you've gained control of before making any moves...

Of course, you could turn all the assists OFF, but you run the risk of encountering a situation for which there is no animation your defender can branch into when you press a button and he'll freeze in place instead. The devs call this phenomenon a "catch hole". I haven't had it happen to me yet on Madden NFL 25 though...

As you get a little more comfortable, you can turn the assists off one at a time as you get your bearings.

    Hope this helps...

Man Thank You for in depth response, I will definitely try those methods and report back

  • I agree ,

The click in even the switch player button logic before the ball is thrown needs to be 100% who is closest to the football , I love clicking switch player on a scramble QB and it decide to pick a lineman getting blocked when I have someone shooting the gap usually my weak side back who just needs me to take control for a tackle for a loss , and those switch to a CB  no where near the play which pulls him off a receiver is the most horrible thing which can happen. I tried to make the pursuit if in zone button one my paddles but it still takes multiple clicks most of the time.
