How is blocking still a problem!?

Decades. This game has been around for decades… and still easily the #2 or #3 tackler of my running backs is my own linemen.

They still decide to go block someone on the opposite side of the field instead of the guy right in front of them. They still decide to block the guy running behind me and turn around and tackle me head on. The only change is now they can pancake someone… who then proceeds to fall for about 5-15yds and inevitably trip me.

Unreal. Just unreal.

  • I think the biggest thing with this that I've noticed is the overall Awareness of lower rated linemen. Idk what the thresholds for reactions are for OL, but overall there are way too many players with an AWR in the 30's or 40's, and that just isn't good for gameplay in general. Linemen need more awareness to react and I think if they just raised the bar for linemen awareness specifically, it would solve the issue. Anytime I've edited my rosters and cranked the OL AWR up, it's played much better.

  • I boosted each lineman to 99 and they still twidle thumbs while they pass by

Well overalls and how the game is coded to operate is clearly a factor as well. All I know is I've created rosters for some years now and having a higher base awareness helped with consistency. It did not solve programing and low overall players from getting beat as they should though. It basically just helped with reaction timing, which helped the game feel more real and have less instances where they completely miss assignments. There's definitely a major programing issue right now though that has been well documented by many players essentially stating that ratings and sliders are not making a difference in gameplay.

  • In my All-Madden Franchise, Besides Sam Cosmi at center, the rest of the line is rookies. Their pass blocking is dismal at best, but my RB Bhayshul Tuten, has 692 yards with 9 TD's at week 7. I traded for the LT from NE, the LG from Vikings, the RG from Seahawks and the RT from the Jets. All rookies with 70+ awareness and fast. A lot of second level blocks being made. Plus Tuten is just flat out fast. Most of the time he gets past the clutter before it develops and his BCV is fantastic.

Since AWR doesn't seem to be handed out as freely as it used to in past Madden games when upgrading players, I've found that a base AWR for OL at 80 seems to work best overall, and most lucky to even hit 90 AWR throughout their career. It really help amp up the consistency in blocking. There's a fine line when balancing the ratings with programing though, as even that change made to the linemen didn't fix how the game operated overall. For example, after editing last years rosters and raising the OL AWR base, it help pass block be more consistent, but run blocking was still not great in getting to the secondary levels and creating consistent gaps.
