Quarterback Mobility

If I am scrambling with my quarterback, how do I execute a stiff arm, juke, or spin behind the line of scrimmage? I am continuing to hold the right trigger, but my player will just respond to whatever button I pushed as if he is not scrambling.

  • @andymal13 In Madden 20, the QB can become the ball carrier by tapping the L2 or Left Trigger button while behind the line of scrimmage. That will make the ball carrier buttons available should you need them. To get back to passing mode, you will need to tap the L2/Trigger again.

Don't confuse this with the R2 or Right Trigger, which will give the QB a speed burst while still in passing mode behind the line.

In past Madden titles you were able to hit the stick down to start running with it behind the line of scrimmage. You are not able to execute ball carrier moves as a QB while they are in a pass play until they make it past the line of scrimmage, unless it's a designed run play like QB draw/option.

So why can’t this feature be added? It’s not difficult to implement this function into the game... In real life, quarterbacks are able to spin, juke, and otherwise evade defenders behind the line of scrimmage. I can share some links to Youtube videos of quarterbacks doing so if this would help the dev team.

I'm sure it's not hard to implement and likely by design choice. QB's in Madden 20 can still shake off defenders attempting to sack them without the user doing it. Do you think if something like that was added players would start to rely on that more instead of passing? I've seen some QB's pull off incredible moves behind the line of scrimmage in real life, but it's rare when you account for the amount of total snaps taken and less than a handful of QB's in the league that can perform these moves.

I would like you to convince me that implementing an automatic “shake-off” feature is better than having a video game respond to user input. I already have a profound distrust that EA Sports does not ‘script’ certain parts of the game to ensure that certain events happen. Leaving more of the game to “automatic” functions doesn’t help this suspicion.
