As I mentioned, environmental audio didn't quite work in ME1. It only worked after a config tweak. This problem is unique to the Legendary Edition.
I found and installed my gaming motherboards onboard audio driver, and plugged my headphones into my motherboard. It's working now. Not as loud as i'm used to, but at least the immersion is not completely ruined by echoing.
