Black Background, Can only see UI, leaves contrasted trails...?

Okay so I've been playing Mass Effect 2 in 4K on my GTX 1060 (and AMD FX-8350 processor) and it's been running perfectly.

Recently I discovered a wonderful texture pack from some Jean-Luc which has been very well received so I gave it a go - Installed texmod (latest version), downloaded some textures and started the game up. After the game had finally loaded, all I could see was a mostly black screen and the text that I was highlighting on the little console at the title screen ("Resume Game"). As I moved down the list, the movement left behind very highly contrasted trails. As I loaded up my save file, all I could make out was the UI, again leaving strong trails against a black background.

So I thought maybe I'll down-res the game; booted it in 1080p and it's been running mostly fine. However I just played Garrus' loyalty mission, and as it got to the last part of it (where Garrus attempts to sniper Sidonis) the contrasted trails re-appeared. I could see the character models and everything, but against any black/neon-blue background, the models were leaving trails.

I'm assuming this issue is being caused by texmod, but I just wanted to make sure; has anyone else been experiencing these issues? Also, most of my graphics settings options have disappeared from my options menu, I can only set the brightness and film grain... nothing else.

Any ideas? Should I deal with it or uninstall texmod?

This is a Texmod issue for sure.

Is this Jean-Luc's  ME2 Texture pack?

How much System Ram do you have? Is that a 3 or 6GB 1060? How big is your pagefile?

If you want to run Texture-Mods without Texmod look here. Works with ME2 too. (Read the description carefully! You also should make a backup of your game files before changing anything.)

I don't know if Jean-Luc's  ME2 Texture pack is compatible with ME3 Explorer. ALOT is.

  • Yeah it's that texture pack.

And I am using the 6GB GTX 1060 along with 16GB RAM (2x8GB) so I'm curious as to why it's happening... it seems like the GPU is reaching its limit which is very unlikely.

I'll look into your solution; I abstained from ALOT because I can't be bothered with torrent files and what not.

    Thanks for your reply!

Well, Me3 Explorer can fix the image format of a texture image as soon as the TPF file that carries the image is loaded.  That could work for jean luc's TPFs too, can't promise though.

The great benefit of ME3 Explorer is that you avoid the long loading times and that Texmode as an error source is gone.

There is no way that a 1060 6GB would come to it's limits with this mod. It is a little bit more likely that the transfer speed from Ram to VRAM is slow or that your CPU can't handle the draw calls, but even that is imho almost impossible.

Do you have "Origin in Game" or the Steam overlay enabled? Other overlay programs could also cause this problem.

If that don't helps, Texmod is an old software, and wile it still works surprisingly well, it has it's bugs.

  • Alright, I went down the ME3 Explorer route and tried the ALOT texture pack - massive difference and works a lot better! It seemed to just be Texmod being buggy and inefficient.

To anyone else using Texmod... don't, I mean, you'll need it for some textures that ALOT couldn't include due to limitations, but it's much more worth the lengthy install process than waiting a few minutes each time you boot the game up and having to deal with lower performance.

    Thanks for your help!!!
