I have the exact same problem. A friend bought ME Trilogy while I had the standalone version. We get that same "Game Required" error regardless of how we try to invite eachother. We can both play on public servers just fine. The one difference here is that I can see my friend's Origin ID under the "friends who play" section...
I've tried reinstalling, repairing the installation on both computers... I'm wondering if due to the Trilogy naming that Origin thinks that they're two different games? And then it's still odd that we can both play on public servers, unless the Trilogy version is only connecting to other Trilogy players. Though your experience with finding eachother on public servers throws that theory into question.
Update: We can find eachother on public servers and play that way. I can start a server and my friend can join if he searches for a public match with the same settings as my lobby, but the error still shows up if he tries to join manually.
My friend and I are both experiencing this after the Origins Patch from 11-28. Very Frustrating. I had EA contact me, but we got nowhere.

I'm having the same issue too
My brothe finally got ME3 and for the first time we were going to play a private MP session. (Between 6-10EST Monday night.) I tried to host and it hung on connecting. He tried to host, same thing. After a bit of playing around he found out in some forum that some settings needed to be changed in his verizon router. Ok that done. It connected! YAAAA! after three waves he had to back out so he could get a better mouse. NP. We tried to connect again and again for the next two hours but know luck.
I've never had any problem playing public MP before but I've never tried hosting a privage session. Is there something I should know? I will note that the Galaxy at War was not connecing (all night) but i don't remember that ever being a problem before when i played public.
I have a 10mb pipe so that shouldn't be the problem. I have a I7 and 4gb of memory so that shouldn't be the problem either. My forewall is a TZ-215. I don't think that is the problem since we connected once and I've never had a problem with publice sessions.
This was not a good first inpression for my brother. ANY idea what the problem is? Or is Origin the problem?

It Isn't - for me, until now
When I was able to play the game - it bugged out for me two weeks ago in a way that requires an as yet to happen server-side fix - some things that helped me with this problem are:
- make sure that UPnP is enabled in your router. I think I disabled this last year as it was supposed to help with this problem, but found some months later than re-enabling it suddenly allowed me to easily connect to people I had problems playing with.
- make sure that at least one of you has their Origin privacy setting set to "Everyone". This has helped me with friend requests where neither of us could otherwise receive.
i still cant join to my friends game or he cant join to my game it says joining forever for both of us pls fix this
