I really looked for a topic about this issue here, and i finally found it x)
Indeed, i got this problem too, even in game it's really dark with HDR. And i wonder about the HDR settings, as much the contrast we see the difference (even if the game is still too dark), as the brightness does not change anything. Is it normal ?
Yeah the same thing is happing to me.I'm on Xbox one X with a LG 4k tv and the game darkens up like crazy and it doesn't need to be in a cut scene.I can be just standing there in a room. It could be bright and you see things clearly and all i have to do is turn the camera a little bit and everything gets darker.

Yes gameplay IS affected as well in ME2 and ME3 to a lesser extent. I play on PC in SDR and the blacks are crushed in many areas with lots of lost details. The issue comes from the DephtOfField shader which has a too low black entry point.
It could be an easy tweak but we cannot modify the shader files ourselves because that makes the game crash. Even adding single a character to a comment line and saving does it (probably because of copy protection). And reshade is inefficient because the problem comes directly from the engine.
The only workaround at the moment is disabling depth of field. But you loose so much of the color grading and art direction that its not worth it.
Please Bioware, do something or at least give us the possibility to do it ourselves.
- 5 years ago@Kierkenstein Giving this a bump. Spent practically all day looking into this, trying to see if there was another way to edit the value if it was referenced elsewhere. Unpacked the Coalesced_INT.bin, tried different combination of configurations for GamerSettings.ini, and other stuff. Nothing that I could see.
It's also pretty humorous to see that if you disable DOF, it also turns off Vignette and Bloom. So it's not even accurate in its descriptor...
Imagine if BioWare had actually committed to a granular approach to PC settings, it may be narrowed down further and could have been playable. - krismate5 years agoRising Traveler@Kierkenstein That's a separate issue, not related to this thread. This is only about the pre-rendered cutscenes having elevated black levels in certain spots.
