Frosty Mod Engine "One or more symbolic links could not be created"

Hi all,

So recently re-installed MAE and went to install some mods this time around on the Frosty Mod Engine. However, when going to launch the game through the mod launcher it initially throws up a pop up saying "new installation detected" and tells me to allow additional permissions. I do that and eventually it comes up with an text box titled "An unhandled exception has occurred" with the following in the text box.

One ore more symbolic links could not be created, please restart tool as Administrator.

at Frosty.ModSupport.FrostyModExecutor.<>c__DisplayClass28_0.<Run>b__0()
at System.Threading.Tasks.Task.Execute()
--- End of stack trace from previous location where exception was thrown ---
at System.Runtime.ExceptionServices.ExceptionDispatchInfo.Throw()
at System.Runtime.CompilerServices.TaskAwaiter.HandleNonSuccessAndDebuggerNotification(Task task)
at Frosty.ModSupport.FrostyModExecutor.<Run>d__28.MoveNext()
--- End of stack trace from previous location where exception was thrown ---
at System.Runtime.ExceptionServices.ExceptionDispatchInfo.Throw()
at System.Runtime.CompilerServices.TaskAwaiter.HandleNonSuccessAndDebuggerNotification(Task task)
at FrostyModManager.MainWindow.<launchButton_Click>d__13.MoveNext()
--- End of stack trace from previous location where exception was thrown ---
at System.Runtime.ExceptionServices.ExceptionDispatchInfo.Throw()
at System.Windows.Threading.ExceptionWrapper.InternalRealCall(Delegate callback, Object args, Int32 numArgs)
at System.Windows.Threading.ExceptionWrapper.TryCatchWhen(Object source, Delegate callback, Object args, Int32 numArgs, Delegate catchHandler)

I've tried other solutions given online with changing permissions, dll files and anti-virus all with no positive outcome.

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

  • @veniino So unfortunately for me the issue turned out to be that the drive the game and mod launcher were installed on, is formatted in the exFAT type of format, which doesn't support the symbolic links that the frosty mod engine creates. And seeing as I don't want to delete all my other stuff on the drive just to play MEA, I am out of luck. Might be a similar issue for you?

    MEC = Mirror's Edge Catalyst, & I don't know how to check to see if my drive is formatted in exFAT.

    @JCGemX

    Right click "Start" > Disk  Management. > look under "file system"

    You run frosty as an Administrator?

    1. Yes, I've been running Frosty as an administrater.

    2. Both of my drives are listed as "NTFS"

  • You can fix it by moving the game in any NTFS drive folder,either that or obviously the not so optional format,I also have this issue but mine is a unrepairable one cause my game mods and mod manager are all in my C drive which is NTFS formated and this issue still appears,it worked yesterday just fine but today this popped out.

    delete mod data from the game golder also delete the cache from mod manager and delete frosty from %localappdata% and then try to add the mods again,if the issue persists then maybe a datapathfix should be added.

  • @Holman4672 heh i have the same issue except to me the game is installed on C drive which is ntfs based i also launch the mod manager using admin rights and yet the error still appears.it worked just fine the other day so i dont understand how i got here and why

    im having this issue after returning to mass effect how would i do a datapathfix like u mentioned?
  • For me the issue was creating a mod list in Frosty with a special character in name/ non-english letter. Fixed that and worked like charm. Maybe someone will have the same problem.
