Game crashes in random spots

I keep getting the message below when the game freezes and then crashes. It's quite annoying because it happens in conversations and I have to keep going through the same things over and over again when it does. Does anyone know what this could mean and/or have the same problem? Thank you!

So far, I have found a lot on Google about this error, but no conclusive solutions (and some contradictory).  For example:

    - Don't use the spacebar to skip conversations.

    - USE the spacebar to skip conversations.

    - Change the display resolution.  Say, make it 16:10 instead of 16:9.

    - Make sure your video drivers are up to date.

    - Use MassEffectConfig to change the audio option from hardware to software.

    - Click your response (in game) before the other person is finished speaking.

Speaking of video drivers, what video card are you using?  What OS?

I bolded the things I usually do/have done, so next time I'll play I'll do the opposite and try changing the settings. I have Windows 7 with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 260, also. Thanks for the help!

I just got Mass Effect and I have the same issue.  The game runs very smoothly and looks great until crashing when making certain character dialog choices.

So far I've personally seen it in two places while hitting 'Investigation' dialog options:

    1) Talking to Dr. Chakwas after getting knocked out by the beacon

    2) While talking to the volus banker in the Presidum (Barla Von).

I get the same gzlibfile error.  After some research it was apparent that this error definitely has some history being reported online.  I just wish there was an official answer.  I know it's a relatively older game and newer titles are raking in the dough, but game crashing bugs like this are no fun.

    Windows 7 32bit

    NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M

I played for about 3 hours without interruption without using space bar to skip and waiting until their done talking to chose an answer, then it crashed. This time I got the last error message and one that said:

    "MassEffect.exe - No Disk

There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into the drive

    \Device\Harddisk1\DR1."

Ugh. I mean, the interruption before watching someone die on Virmire is nice, but no thanks.

I experienced game crashes with dragon age origins and solved the problem by setting the affinity to only 1 CPU. I'm not sure wether this would help, but trying can't hurt. Open up the task manager, go to the processes tab and right click on masseffect.exe Then click on "Set affinity..." This opens a new dialog window in which you can select the amount of CPU's the game is allowed to use. Deselect all and choose one. Hope this helps :D
