mass effect 1 doors wont open

So I bought mass effect 1 and put 40 plus hours but when I got to feros the door wouldn't open. So I restart the whole  game and game back to feros and the same thing happen again. So I throw the game away because it was broke. Then I went to gamestop and bought another mass effect 1 and put 20 plus hours into that gameplay but got to ilos and the elevator won't open.
