Mass Effect 1 keeps crashing on start up.

I'm running windows 7 64 bit with an AMD 6100 six core processer and 16 GB of ram, but for whatever reason, after installing the 1.02 patch, the game itself keeps crashing when I try to play it. I'm not trying to run it through origin, just installed it directly from a disk, but it just doesnt want to run. any help would be appreciated.
