Mass Effect 1 LE, Seizure Inducing effects on Ilos

WARNING!

To fellow players, and to Bioware...

there are potentially seizure-inducing effects on Ilos in Mass Effect 1 LE...

specifically, the deliberately broken Prothean AI holograms...

I know full well they are supposed to appear to be malfunctioning and while they were just fine in the original...

I think Bioware made an oversight while getting the game to run at higher framerates than it was originally intended...

you see... the constant barrage of flashing lights coming off of Vigil and the other hologram recording like him is potentially dangerous...

the light from him is flashing far too quickly to be safe for epileptic players. This could potentially hurt someone.

And before any kneejerk players rush to defend this, keep in mind that seizures might look funny to you from the outside... but just how fun do you think it is for someone to pass out, and suddenly wake up on the floor, bleeding and with a broken arm or worse? Imagine that's you in that situation.

So Bioware, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE slow Vigil's animations down or replace him with a different hologram entirely, doesn't matter, just please make it safer for epileptics. If my dad saw this it could very well kill him.

  • Hi Darko,

Is there any update to this?

I played through LE ME1 and Vigil and the damaged Prothean VIs were a huge migraine trigger for me, even with holding my hand over the screen, and now I'm replaying again and it's still a huge issue. The flashing of the lights on the VIs are much stronger and more frequent than even in the OT ME1, which I (and other light sensitive folks) could tolerate much better. This is a seizure, migraine, and light sensitivity trigger that could be resolved easily with slowing the animation down and making it less bright.

    Thanks!

  • This is a horrible trigger for light sensitive folks, and is more of a migraine and nausea trigger for me than even the issue in Cyberpunk2077. The only way I can get through scenes with damaged Prothean VIs or Vigil is to fully turn my back to the screen with eyes closed and covered (since if I just close my eyes the light pulsing is strong enough to be seen still), skip through all of the VI's dialogue whenever the camera is facing it, and skip asking the side questions since I just wanted to be done. If new players are in the same light-sensitivity boat, then they'll miss out on really plot essential dialogue, too.

I've played through this section of LE ME1 twice now within the past several weeks and I was hoping it would have been fixed by now, given that there's another post here that talks about this animation and light being a seizure trigger, and a community manager said they'd report it to the team.

if you have migraines, seizures, or other light-sensitivity issues, this is a really critical problem.

  • It's been almost a year since this post was created and I can confirm that the issue still exists. My girlfriend had to leave the room and I felt ill after several minutes of talking with Vigil(and boy does he have a lot to say, most of which is important!). Please fix this before someone gets hurt. I'm playing on an LG OLED TV and it was a miserable experience even as a non-epileptic.
