You do realize that you are reading translations of Asari and Salarian writings, right?? This means it is very simple to believe that in the original language it may well say, ugly grey alien attacked us.....and Sam/Omni-tool issues translation based on current knowledge to Kett attacked us.....

I am also not quite following on that #2 - or #20.
The Angarans call them Kett and have been fighting them for eighty years. We didn't invent the term when we arrived (there is a line early in the game where they say we start calling them that and they're not sure why - I suspect we got it from the Angarans and that is what they actually call themselves).
I would think the Salarians asked who they were surrendering to and were told. The Asari stole their local starmaps and have been fighting pitched battles with them since they arrived. I don't think either knowing what they are called is out of place.
