Mass Effect black screen when palying in 16:9

Hi All

I have embarked on the jorney of the Three Masses obviously starting with the first one and for the light of day I just cant make this game to work properly.

My main issue Is that the game freezes when I put the display in 16:9 (norm. widescreen) and I ofc do so because I have a 24” monitor like everyone else these days. Now when I say I freezes I mean black screen and complete lockup of the system which is a first for me in many years. The problem occurs especially when either loading a new area or with the council cinematics.

And the system configuration launcher locks up aswell but I have ignored that bit mabey a symptom.

You are ofc. going to say just play it in the highest (4:3) setting this is all about the story after all. But the game is so good looking with the hd textures that it deserves better.

And yes I had these problems before I started patching, in fact the patches have helped a bit I think

System spec.

Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

Intel Core i7 2600K

Gigabyte Z68x-UD3H-B3

16gb corsair vengeance DDR3

Sapphire HD 7950 Vapor X (Driver CCC. 2013.0328.2218.38225)

Main drive Intel 520 SSD.

Everything is running at stock clock speeds.

The game is a normal box edition bought way back upgraded to 1.02 and as far as I can tell the install is complete

Of the top of my head this is what I have tried:

*Play as admin.

*Compatibility XP SP2+3

*Sound driver should be up to date

*CPU core affinity (have no effect what so ever)

*flawless wide screen support

*Installing direct x from the disc

*applying large addressing fix

I have NOT installed a new device driver because quite frankly I don’t know whether im supposed to update or roll back a to what versions.

Im gonna stop here and hope this is not information overkill.

I hope you guys can help

Happy New year.

The game itself launched with very low resolution textures, so are you using mods to play with high resolution textures? If so, try playing without them and see if that fixes anything.

Since you have a graphics card by AMD, you can try updating your drivers. Rolling back is something you only need to do with Nvidia GPUs, because they have lousy support for the original Mass Effect.

    Hi Again

I have just tried installing the latest video driver for my grapichs card. It did not change anything.

And i would like to point out again that i started palying the disc version ( 1.00 i would guess), and the problems with the

game frezing up led me to the HD texture patch that i did not know off at the time. So i short my problem is persistent though the Retail version, Version 1.02

    and With the changes mentioned.

Is there a log anywhere i can se why the game is failing ?

  • Have you tried with lower resolutions whilst in 16:9 mode?  Say 1366×768 or 1280×720?

    Hi Again

Yes I have tried different resolutions. But There was a fix listed in windows oddly enough, so i though what the hell.

It downloaded the version 1.02 patch again and installed it, from what i can tell its the same as the one i downloaded manually

but at least the computer does not crash completely now it just give me a "rendering error" and crashes the game.

From what i can tell from other web sites this is a error in the bioengine.ini file allthough i have yet to find out what parameter is causing the crash.

I havent tinkered with the .ini files btw

    Ok Status update

So the black screening was deffenetly af fault in the ver 1.02 udate.

Regarding the rendering faults, i have tried turning off Hardware sound as suggested elsewhere.

And then I noticed that the error says that the game cant find lines of code in Kernelbase.dll and Masseffect.exe files wich are there.

So both the install folder and the documents folder for ME are read only so i have changed those aswell, all of the above has made the game alot more

stable allthough it still crashes, at major story cut scenes with "rendering faults"

I am playing as admin, the computer only have one user "me" and i do have admin rights on the computer.

    UAC is turned off aswell

    Any ideas i have overlooked?

This game is so awsome when its running properly

When you say you are playing as admin, do you mean that your Windows login is an admin account, or do you mean you are right clicking on ME, and telling it to Run as Administrator?  User level admin access and running as administrator are not actually the same, and the latter provides greater levels of access.

    Hi Again

Yes the user has admin rights on the computer.

Yes i run the game as administrator aswell.

I just played through the entire Feros mission without an encident last night so i thought all was well.

Then the first planet i stopped at after this was one of the Side mission planets and the game did a complete crash again (black screen + system freeze )

just when i got there I really dont understand whats going on here.

Mabey its a memory leak problem.
