Mass effect freezes during game into

Hello I just recently bought the Mass Effect Trilogy from the Origin store but now I'm having trouble getting it to work properly. The games screen goes black during the character creation or opening cinematic with the sound stuttering. This also causes the computer to freeze and I am unable to end the process and have to do a hard restart.

Here are my system specs

Processor
AMD FX(tm)-6300 Six-Core Processor

Video Card
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670

RAM
8.0 GB

Operating System
Microsoft Windows 8.1 Professional Edition (build 9600), 64-bit

So far I have made sure all my drivers are updated, tried to fix the install via origin, re-download and reinstall, ran in windows XP compatibility mode, and ran as administrator. I also disabled Origin in game. No success here I've been pretty frustrated with the whole ordeal :-(
  • Hi @KindisSweet

    Try this:

    - Go to your ">drive<:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Mass Effect\Binaries" folder.

    - Rename the "OpenAL32.dll" to "OpenAL32.bak" (without the quotes)

    - Rename the "wrap_oal.dll" to "OpenAL32.dll" (without the quotes)

    - Run the Game from the "MassEffect.exe" in the same folder as an Administrator (right click the "MassEffect.exe" > Run as Admin)

Please create a DxDiag, also go to your Reliability monitor (Press the windows key and "R" at the same time and copy or type "perfmon /rel" (without the quotes) in > ENTER) and look if it has ME1 entries.

If yes double click at the last one, copy it to the clipboard, (Bottom left corner) save it to a text file and load it up like the DxDiag.

    Hi @KindisSweet

Good to here that it worked and no need to repay me. 🙂

Also thanks for the XP, have fun with the game.

  • Hi, I have the same problem, except my reliability log shows nothing of an me1 failure. I have already tried the .dll rename thing and IT gave me an adittional minute or so on the intror Video before the next crash... an idea?
