"Mass Effect has stopped working" after Downloading on Steam

I very recently bought the first Mass Effect on Steam. I waited a few hours for the download to complete. When everything was ready. I went to play the game, but then the error message popped up saying "Mass Effect has stopped working" with the option to "Check for online solution" (What a waste of existence that option is). I can't even get into the main menu, let alone a black screen or anything. Straight up only a few seconds after I click play, the error pops up, and I have no idea why.
