ME Legendary Edition: won't let me use mouse

I don't have a controller for PC, and I don't want one. Mouse + Keyboard is better, and is how I played through all of these games originally.  Trying the LE now, and when I start ME1 I can't even get to the character creation screen because it's forcing everything to be a controller. 

There has to be a workaround for this, right?  It's unimaginable that a major studio would release a product without the most basic of choices about how you want to play it :o
