ME2 changes resolution after loading to something my monitor doesn't support

The launcher loading ME2 screen displays, then the resolution shifts to the picture being right and below of centered. The orange wireframe Normandy loading screen shows briefly, then the screen goes black like it is changing resolutions. The game then gets put to the background, and I'm on the Windows desktop. Alt-tabbing back into game and the resolution flickers, then get sent right back to desktop.

The first time I loaded the game, it was fine.  I did not altar any settings. I went through character import creation and watched the comic book recap. This only occurred after first playing the game until Shepard wakes up after Lazarus, saving and quitting to desktop.  Selecting resume the first attempt caused the issue.  I then tried selecting start from the launcher with the same results.

I am not able to play the game at this point.

  • I managed to solve my problem by going to edit ...\Mass Effect Legendary Edition\Game\ME2\BioGame\Config\GamerSettings.ini and changing the resolution from default 1920x1080 to the native resolution of my monitor, 2560x1440.  I also changed the max framerate from 240 to 144, the monitors max refresh rate.  I probably didn't need to do the latter.

  • @Paragoon When I open that file all I see is

    [appcompat]
    Compatlevelcomposite=5
    Compatlevelcpu=5
    Compatlevelgpu=5

    Did you just add the resolution change?
  • Something similar happens to me as well.

    I use AMD VSR. My monitor is 1440p, but I set all games to 1800p (3200x1800).

    Mass Effect 2 isn't allowing me to select my custom resolution, though the setting is there. So I go into the INI file and set the below lines:

    [SystemSettings]
    ResX=3200
    ResY=1800

    I load up the game and the launcher starts up at 1440p resolution, but then just before it kicks over to the game, resizes to 3200x1800. No problem.

    I play the game at 1800p, as expected, but when I reload the game next time it loads only in 1440p. I go back to the INI file and the ResX and ResY values are back to 2560 and 1440. WTF!

    @AscelinMortas

    The "GamerSettings.ini" is newly created out of settings in the "Coalesced_bin" every time you start the game up.

    You need to make the file read only if you want the settings to be consistent.

    Notice: As long as the file is read only some changes in the in game settings (Like resolution) will not get set.

    @NightRaven2801

    If you can't edit the setting in game you need to edit the "GamerSettings.ini" with a text editor

    You find the file in the game folder = "Mass Effect Legendary Edition\Game\ME2\BioGame\Config\GamerSettings.ini"
