ME3 crashing just after authenticating DLC (possible Retaliation bug?)

*UPDATE 1*

For anyone else who may be having a similiar problem, here's how I've been getting it resolved:

I [Admin. Edit] Please contact support via this link: https://help.ea.com/en/contact-us/
and explained my situation to them along with all the troubleshooting that I've done thus far.  I was straightforward, friendly, and clear about everything.  Eventually, my case was escalated to "tier 2", meaning I was transferred over to speak with a technical expert.  He was able to reproduce the crash I was experiencing, and we were able to isolate the problem to the Retaliation DLC, though he could not figure out why Retaliation was crashing my game.  Now my case is being transferred over to BioWare themselves, as there may be something with the Retaliation DLC that has affected my account.

In the meantime, I have deleted the Retaliation DLC folder (...C:/Program Files (x86)/Origin Games/Mass Effect 3/BIOGame/DLC/DLC_CON_MP4) and my game is working properly.  I do not currently have access to any of the content that came with Retaliation, which includes being unable to fight against the Collectors, but everything else in the multiplayer is working.

I am currently waiting to hear back from tech support and/or BioWare about my account.  As a pleasant surprise, EA tried upgrading my copy of Mass Effect 3 from the Digital Deluxe Edition to the Collector's Edition.  I'm not going to be getting any of the swag that went with the CE that I didn't already get with the DDE, and if you are experiencing these same issues you shouldn't expect them to upgrade your game, but it's still pretty cool.

As much as people complain about EA's tech support, my experience so far has been quite good.  The worst part so far has been waiting on the phone for 45 minutes before tech support took my initial call.  After that, however, everything has been going smoothly.

*END UPDATE 1*

Every time I boot up ME3, the game crashes just after it finishes authenticating the DLC.  I suspect this is because of the Retaliation bug because when I uninstalled/reinstalled all the multiplayer DLC except for Retaliation, the game booted up without crashing.  When I finished installing Retaliation, the game crashed after DLC authentication again.

If you have had to deal with the Retaliation bug, how did you fix it?  Is it something I can do myself, or will I need EA's technical support to do something on their end?

So far, I have done the following:

  1. Checked up updates on the game and all DLC.
  2. Run the repair tool on the game and all DLC.
  3. Uninstalled and reinstalled the game and all DLC.
  4. Uninstalled and reinstalled Origin.
  5. Run Origin as administrator.
  6. Defragged my hard drive.
  7. Run the disk cleanup tool.
  8. Changed the setting of my UAC.
  9. Downloaded and installed an updated awc.dll file.
  10. Checked for compatibility issues with anything I may have downloaed in the previous 24 hours.  Nothing is incompatible.

None of these have worked.  The game still crashes after authenticating DLC.

Here are my relevant system specs:

Sorry to hear that. Mine started working again about a week ago. I can only say that my account still shows that it needs to be re-synced. I guess that wasn't the root cause of my issue. Either way I am not sure what actually fixed it. Nothing new was done and it just happened to work after I tried to join a friend's game. No problems since.

Curious, have you moved the Retaliation DLC back to your HDD on the Xbox from the Flash drive?

I had this problem in the early part of 2013.  It magically went away by itself after several weeks.

Last week the game crashed after DLC authorization and since I had this bug previously I renamed the Retaliation DLC folder and launched the game, and it worked.  So I started using the other work around where Origin is set offline, you start ME3, and then enable it after you get into the main menu.

Have heard several hypotheses that this is related to either challenge status or possibly just an inability to communicate with some sort of server handling DLC or the character profile.  Or that your profile is allegedly desync'd, or some data is corrupted.  I have no idea.

    I am on PC

    Windows 7 Professional 64bit SP1

    Core2 Duo E8400 @3.6GHz

    8GB RAM

    ATI HD6850, Catalyst 13.12

I have a similar problem as capn233 said (Win 7 Pro 64 bit, SP1 seems to be the culprit), BEX error, filed ticket yesterday with Origin support. The error appeared after I have updated graphic drivers. The Origin people should have complete report. I hoped that after long time running ME3, EA's DRM glitches are fixed. Alas, this is not the case. It is not Retaliation related as deleting it does not let the game start. I also tried repairing the files, replacing two DRM dlls, starting offline (the game actually starts) and then going online (it works but only for 2 or 3 minutes), checking firewall, and reinstalling Origin. Nothing helps and I think the problem is on the server side related to DRM. Apparently, installation of new drivers counts as DRM event (new PC?) and I have run out of these 5 (or whatever the secret number is) times allowed to play. As new drivers come out regularly each month, and these are updated automatically, this might be a problem if ppl udate frequently. It might hopefully reset with some time or might not. I hope Origin people can fix it for me. But I'm asking here just in case some EA/BW people can do it as well.

After chatting with tech support, it seems that DRM is fine on its own but there are always possibilities of connectivity issues or some registry errors. I have to clean up everything (possibly using Revo) and will try to start from ground zero or as close as reasonably possible incluing graphic drivers.

Nothing works as the problem seems to be on the server side. The old temporary fix works though:

    1. Set Origin offline

    2. Start ME3, click on Connect to EA servers, cannot connect

    3. Go online in Origin

    4. Rapidly click on Connect to EA servers

    5. Rapidly go to multiplayer. Play as much as you want either hosting or off host.

The only problem is that it is impossible to accept invites from friends as you are teleported to main menu and the game crashes right after that. Otherwise, everything seems to function normally.

It is probably a similar thing to Retaliation glitch/bug. But unlike other people noticed, deleting/moving Retaliation DLC folder does not help in my case.

unfortunately I was selected by this glorious glitch yesterday, before that I was all good for over a year..

maybe time is the only fix to it, which means I cannot join friends' lobbies for weeks/months/years..

I'm surprised they would allow this game breaking bug to keep away customers and adversely affect playerbase and word of mouth.

That said, it rarely does auto resolve itself.  Don't count on it however.

    >>> For PC, the workaround is:

    1] Go offline in Origin.

2] Start Mass Effect 3.  Get to the main menu.  It will fail to connect because offline

3] Manually click connect.  It will fail again because offline

4] Then, and only then, go online in Origin.

5] Click connect again in Me3 main menu.  It should work and multiplayer should be fine

    >>> For consoles, there are workarounds posted in some older threads somewhere on the internet that involve swapping out memory sticks with the Retaliation DLC on it or somewhat; I don't have a console so you can go look it up yourself.  Happy hunting 🙂

  • So I'm on Xbox, and after 2847 hours of almost glitch-free gaming, this game-breaking bug has hit me as well. EA chat advisor said plain as day there is nothing to be done and even gave me a 15% Origin discount code. This sucks.
