I know they got a lot of negative feedback for trying to tie MP back into the SP storyline with the original series, but I don't see why they couldn't tie unlocking some equipment or special moves back into it. No different than pre or scaled up order bonuses. That would be like optional training that you could unlock if you wanted or skip without effect if the idea of training doesn't appeal to you. If you train, you got to do it with somebody.
