Either you spent some on weapons and mods, or they will simply come available later in the game. I finished at level 71. At 17, you are basically only starting.
Yes, everytime you come onboard the Tempest. But there are other perks that will reduce the time to gather points. You can read them by yourselves.

with most of my characters by mid play-through they usually windup with about 3 sets of armor, i outfit them depending on the situation. the team members i plan to bring, and the terrain i'm looking at, and what role i'm fitting into given my current team, vanguard, infiltrator, etc. however, if i'm going to be flipping between tech & biotic or combat profiles a lot that helius defender armor is the best fit.

Pathfinder looks the best in my opinion but its stats are just meh and i couldnt find it useful anywhere on insanity.
N7 for biotic thats for sure, you dont have any alternative for that class if you play pure biotic.
Anyway with some luck you can build a lvl3 N7 set on lvl10-11. But that forced me to rush for Havarl to get platinum and sell a bunch of other minerals to get credits for iridium from the kiosk on the tempest. I think i had the rest of the materials already by that time. Also scan the available planets (i think one or two of them has a satellite for a juicy 50 milky way points but not sure). Research points were a bit scarce at that point so i scanned almost everything in order to get them to lvl3 because i took the reconnaissance (hidden caches) first of the cryo pod perks.
Pathfinder looks good, but I don't want to be "Pink". I hate it, that I can't color everything ....
The Damage Reduction is not bad if you stack it with Kinetic mods. You can get up to about 90 points (which with other options for your build can bump you over 100 which is 50% damage incoming).

Pathfinder gear with Tech armor skill and one of the augments for 25% shields when you kill an enemy. Makes you extremely tanky. I cruised through insanity with it. My NG+ Im trying to make N7 but lacking in MW research points. The the cryo-pod bonus doesn't stack up over time so you only get 100 when you collect it.

N7 armour is great for biotics. Bonuses are satisfying and it also looks good.
Pathfinder armour does not seem particularly appealing for any playstyle.

Which is odd, because it and the Remnant armor are my go to armors because of the DR. DR goes with any playstyle.

Pathfinder is just plain bad. Damage reduction is nice but weapon accuracy is something you can live without. Remnant gives more utility but after lvl5 you look like a christmas tree. If you dont mind that, then the remnant outclasses the pathfinder.
For me the hyperguardian worked the best for a tank soldier. Equipped with a fusion mod of health i had like 1.6k hp or so plus 500 something shields. Was "fun".
Tastes differ, as much as i love the looks of the pathfinder just doesnt fit in any of my builds.
