I really hate them.
I don't like Sudoku at the best of times, and having it imposed on my using weird alien glyphs is even worse. At least if it were made of normal numbers I could do it on a pad and paper. The way it is set up takes something I find tedious at the best of times and adds a layer of needless frustration to it.
I don't mind mini-games in my video games; a little bit of puzzling can add some verisimilitude to the world, provide a bit of a diversion (personally, I really found myself enjoying the hacking mini-game in ME2), and it can be a good way to reward players who want to explore every nook and cranny (either with a bit of loot, or just with interesting bits of background or humor). But if you are going to be putting it on the critical path --or even closely adjacent to that path -- it better not be anything more challenging or time consuming than the Towers of Hanoi, and you better not do it more than once.
This system, where you have to do what amounts to a kind of crossword puzzle* AND if you get it wrong you end up spawning enemies who are just challenging enough to be tedious without being fun? That's is just a terrible design choice.
Having gotten that off my chest: I just keep a page with all the solutions on my second monitor and use that; both IGN and Eurogamer have a good page of solutions that doesn't have meaningful spoilers; all you'll learn is how many puzzles there are on each world, and I guess the names of some planets you won't have learned in the beginning of the game. So I'd say just do that on whatever screen is handy. Even a phone will work; I just checked the Eurogamer page on my (admittedly large) V20 and i could read it just fine.
*Although honestly, if the game had included a mini-game that required solving a Mass Effect crossword puzzle, that would actually have been cool.
