[PC] Mass Effect 1 not responding after 3 minutes

I've been completely unable to play Mass Effect 1 on my new PC because the application always stops responding after about 3 minutes, and ending the process is the only way to stop it. It doesn't matter what I do in-game (sitting in the menu, playing from a save, switching options), at 3 minutes after start-up it always stops responding.

I've tried several suggested workarounds in order to solve it, such as reinstalling the game at least four times, trying out different compatibility settings, installing DirectX from the official binaries, replacing OpenAL with the current version, using Software audio and a variety of graphics settings, installing legacy PhysX versions, disabling all overlays, using DXVK, and even going back to the unsupported Origin client. However, nothing has worked.

My system is on Windows 11, the CPU is a Ryzen 5800X3D, the GPU a Radeon RX 6700. Is there anything else I could try before giving up? Thanks in advance.

  • Hi, @ChaoticMote you write that you tried disabling overlays but did you try enabling only EA App in game overlay? It helped me in the past with ME1 freezing (though on Win 10 and Nvidia card). If it doesn't help maybe try moving ME1 to a drive different than Windows is installed on.

Thanks for the quick reply, I enabled the EA app overlay and so far it hasn't crashed in 20 minutes! I'll play around some more and see if it remains stable.

I usually disable client overlays since they often cause issues (for example the Origin overlay causing poor performance in ME3), so this would be a bizarre solution but I'll take it! Hopefully it stays that way. Thanks again!
