The "sunset" argument sounds like an excuse. I just downloaded ME3 and played a multiplayer game. The game still functions as it did in 2012. This sounds more like an account entitlement issue, which I think support SHOULD be able to fix.
I would try support again and hope you get connected to someone more helpful. Keep in mind that support might be slower during the holiday period.
