It's a fling. You can still be in a relationship with another character.

Weird. For me, I did get locked out.
SpoilerI had a fling with her in Mass Effect 2 with my FemShep while also maintaining the Kaidan Alenko relationship, then when I hit Mass Effect 3 I admitted the fling to Kaidan but kept my relationship option with him open. But when I spoke to Kelly first after the Citadel attack, then dealt with the Leviathan mission before going to Kaidan, I restarted the relationship with Kelly first and it was locked in with Kaidan very upset.
Anyone else get that?
