Re: Mass Effect 2 and Windows 10. Will we get a fix?

As Windows 10 is still only available as a preview it is not a supported OS.

  • I am not speaking about the "preview".  I have read that the compatibility of the final Windows 10 will be similar to Windows 8.  So I ran a Windows 8 compatibility check on my system and Mass Effect 2 is listed as not compatible.  Is it possible that Windows 10 could change that?  I sure hope so.  But, if not, my question was, will EA/Bioware do a compatibility fix for ME2 games played on Windows 10?

  • EA what do you mean by Windows 10 is not supported OS. You are writing as if Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 is supported. Windows 7, I can understand because people are using Windows 7, but why Windows XP and Vista, and many games like PvZ GW can work in Windows 10. Then why only Mass Effect 2? So, make Mass Effect 2 playable for Windows 10.

The Game is 7 years old and was written for the OS you mentioned and is therefore listed as compatible for this operating systems.

That doesn't mean the game will not run on Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, as a matter of fact it does run most of the time without any problems on this operating systems.

I'd just like to say that I'm running Mass Effect 2 just fine on my system with Windows 10 Home Premium 64 bit. I have had to make the point of running the clean boot to install the game and all of the content without issue, and found it preferable to activate it in clean boot as well (running it for the first time, and signing into the irritating Cerberus Network for the first time).  It should also be noted that there's been a large number of issues with what character's are acceptable for passwords, so I generally just recommend either trying out the character's stated to be acceptable in this thread here (linkage!) or go with a pure alphabetical upper and lower case string comboed with 1 through 0.  Again, I do believe you only need to go through the whole irritation of the clean boot and install (possibly with a repair/update) on the first go round, after that all should be well.  Oh, ALSO!  DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CONFIGURE THE GAME WITH THE CONFIGURATION TOOL IN THE GAME FOLDER!  Set up your audio & visual preferences in the game itself. And be aware that the game has some odd dual use of ME2Game.exe and MassEffect2.exe which I never really got, but ...  I basically (with an AMD card) create 2 profiles in AMD, one for ME2Game.exe and one for MassEffect2.exe.  It's extra work, but if you want some of the benefits of a GPU Profile for your game, worth it (I think).

    My 3 cents.  🙂

Edit: Just in case, a clean boot requires "Run -> "msconfig" -> Services Tab -> Check 'Hide all Microsoft Services' -> Disable All & Apply -> Startup Tab and 'Open Task Manager' -> Disable  absolutely everything in 'Startup' tab.  Close, hit apply again if need be, and 'ok.'  A prompt should appear and you should just agree to restart immediately.  When it boots back up, pretty much nothing will be running that will interfere with the installation.

Please create a DxDiag, also go to your Reliability monitor (Press the windows key and "R" at the same time and copy or type "perfmon /rel" (without the quotes) in > ENTER and look if it has ME2 entries.

If yes double click at the last one, copy it to the clipboard, (Bottom left corner) save it to a text file and load it up together with the DxDiag. You can do that with the "choose file" button at the bottom right corner of the reply window.

    You're welcome.

One of your save games or one of the ini files is corrupt. If it is a save game you can find out which one be testing them one by one or in small groups if you have many.

I have a problem when i try to enter the game. When i click the icon, even if i open it from origin, it shows me that it's loading and then stops. Not even a black screenor the usual "has stopped working" message. I tried everything that was written on this post or other posts and i still can't solve it.

    Yes they are perfect.

Go to your ">Drive<:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Mass Effect 2\Binaries\Core" folder and delete the "ActivationUI.exe"

Then repair the game. (in Origin > Game Library > right click ME2 > Repair) > test.

If that don't helps, go to your ">Drive<:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Mass Effect 2\Binaries" folder and rename the "MassEffect2.exe" to "MassEffect2Launcher.exe"

Then rename the "ME2Game.exe" to "MassEffect2.exe" > test.

If that also don't helps, run the Windows System File Checker Sfc /scannnow and post the concluding message.

    Please clear your Origin cache.

All settings in Origin (only in Origin not in the games) are back to default settings after this.)

        - close Origin completely. (right click on the Origin symbol in the task bar > close)
        - Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time.
        - Type or copy  "%ProgramData%/Origin" (without quotes) > hit ENTER
        - Delete all the files and folders in the Origin folder, except for the "LocalContent" folder. (The "LocalContent" folder must remain untouched.)

        - Delete the "Mass Effect 2" folder in the "LocalContent" folder.
        - Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time.
        - Type or copy "%AppData%" (without quotes)  > hit ENTER
        - Now your Windows explorer should have brought you to your "C:\Users\>your user name<\AppData\Roaming" folder
        - Delete the "Origin"  folder inside the "Roaming" folder
        - In the address bar of your Windows explorer click on the word "AppData".
        - Open the "Local" folder
        - Delete the "Origin"  folder inside the  "Local" folder
        - Restart your PC. > test

If that also not works, create a new Windows user account (Administrator) > reboot > log in to the new account and teste the game there.

Leave it to Origin. To create problems.  Earlier this year I was able to run all Mass Effect games.  Then by August I had problems with mass 4, mass 3 and now mass 2.  Getting back to mass 4. That problem got resolved by doing a full windows 10 reinstall.  If you talk to the so called experts at Origin, they are quick to blame windows 10 for the problems.  With Mass 3 and 2 its a direct x issue I am seeing.  You try to tell them that the game was working up to some point. May as well be talking to a wall.  Tried to complain about all of the BS I seen from about 90% of there support staff.  The last 3 times I tried they wanted a read out of the system.  They don't have any direct answers.  No wonder Mass effect 4 wasn't accepted.  So much for bioware making decent games, they have a support staff (Origin) is pretty much a laughing stock of the industry.  They owe their customers better.  Not cop out answers.
