Re: Mass effect wont launch wont launch from origin but 2 and 3 will?

I'm experiencing the exact same issue.

Problem: ME1 Fails to launch when downloaded and installed via Origin, Mass Effect Trilogy.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Download METrilogy via Origin.
  2. Install ME1,2,3.
  3. ME1 Fails to launch, ME2 Launches and plays fine (alibiet some crashing and bugs =)

Troubleshooting

Right Click ME1 Icon in Origin > Play Game

  • First time - A window opens, asking for my product key. The button the enter the product key will click, but does not open any field to enter the product key. Clicked out of this window, repeat the process above (Right Click ME1 Icon in Origin > Play Game). Cloud sync activates, then nothing happens. No errors, no additional pop-up windows asking me for a product key.

Download patch, and attempt to execute.

  • Upon executing the patch, I recieve a pop-up which reads, "Mass Effect is not found. Please reinstall the game from the original source and try again."

Further Troubleshooting

  1. Right click the ME1 Icon > Repair Install > Re-attempt to execute the patch. Same error, this did not fix the issue.
  2. Right click the ME1 Icon > Check for Update > Origin returns a pop-up window "Game is up to date." Then, I execute the patch, Origin returns same as before, "Mass Effect is not found. Please reinstall the game from the original source and try again."
  3. Next, right click the ME1 Icon > Play > Cloud Syncing activates, Syncs > Origin returns a pop-up window "Cloud Syncing not available for this game" -(paraphrased). Then, I execute the patch again, to see if anything happens. Nope, same as before, the patch doesn't recognize ME1 as being installed, and seems like it can't find it.
  4. Right click the ME1 Icon >Show Game Details > Could Storage Tab > Uncheck Enable cloud storage for all games. Try to Play, nothing happens.
  5. Try the patch executable again for funsies. Same error as before.

EA Support,

Maybe there is a command line we can try that will help the patch find the ME1 install upon execution?

Thoughts?

Thanks bud, I appreciate the redirect. 😕mileyvery-happy:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can replace it [the ME1 executable application in your Origin Games/ME directory] either by downloading this file or extracting it yourself:

[link for executable in this thread]

    http://answers.ea.com/t5/Mass-Effect-1/PC-Mass-Effect-Won-t-Start-A-New-Solution/m-p/1435670#M2911

Whichever method you use, place the file in the root of your Mass Effect directory, then
try running the patch again. Hopefully it should work this time. Don't bother running

MassEffectLauncher.exe.  It will pop up an error about missing a .bmp file and will do

nothing.  We're putting it there because the patch looks for it to determine if the game is installed.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I found the Origin Games/ME directory, I discovered that I did, indeed have an ME1 executable. But, I thought I would try swapping yours with the one already in place. So, I went ahead and swapped executables, launched the patch, and it was a no go. The patch couldn't find the game.

    • Then I tried running the .exe as an administrator, and just as you had mentioned, it returned a message saying that it could not find the .bmp file, (although for me, it said it was looking for an .xml, in either case, it's most likely the same difference).
    • This is where I screwed up: I tried clicking the ME1 icon to play, but the play option was unavailable, so I clicked download instead (a desperate attempt at this point). Once I did that, I could see my BioGame folder purge itself, then start putting suff back in there as it downloaded. I saved the original .exe, and tried to put it back into the /BioGame folder, to see if I could sneak by with an Install Repair, but I was not so lucky, the option wasn't available. *CaptPicardsFacepalm*

At this point I can try to:

    • Hack it some more, and to try and jerry-rig it.
    • Ask for a refund, and go by a hard copy. It's probably easiest for everyone, EA support included.

    Thanks again,

When you say that you have the ME1 executable, do you mean Mass Effect.exe or MassEffectLauncher.exe?  Which directory did you find it in?

Ah; it was MassEffect.exe, not MassEffectLauncher.exe, like yours.

    I found it in \Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Mass Effect\BioGame

Ok.  You've got the wrong file.  You need to put MassEffectLauncher.exe into \Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Mass Effect\

Incidentally, I'm tired.  Mass Effect.exe is important, but not a part of this solution and can be left alone.

Aha, thanks for the tip. I'm currently reinstalling...😕mileymad:

Going to give it another go with the launcer.exe in \Mass Effect.

    Thanks!
