I assume you restarted your machine?
If yes, did you changed the Windows standard documents folder?
What OS do you use? Any updates to that OS in the time before the problem accrued?
Any other changes on your machine? (software hardware)
I have restarted my machine and there was still no sign of the game seeing the files, as far as I know, there was no update to windows 10 last night and I have not changed any major settings on my PC. ME2 is running though steam and the only thing I did different tonight was stop it from telling me the key codes (I was lazy and never turned them off and thought it was time I did so)
So I manged to fix it, not really sure how but here are the steps I took
1) I moved my saved data folder to a different location (as a back up)
2)Deleted the save file that was under c:my name/my documents/bioware/Mass effect 2/ saves
3)Booted up the game
4) Shut down the game
5)Copied over my back up save form step one to the save location in step 2
6)Booted up game again and there they were
