Re: My squad mates die even though they are all loyal

@Wiz13688 I checked guides already to see where I was going wrong. But even following their advice one person always dies on hold the line

Not sure if it's applicable to you. But maybe it has to do with the ‘lost achievements’ bug after the patch update. Mainly Xbox users.

Because the achievements for completing a loyalty mission are lost. It could be that your game isn’t registering your squad members as loyal. You can check your trophies in game.

@Duuuc A quick look at team status (cabin terminal) will show if your quad members are loyal. The only other thing witch can end in member's death is the upgrade status. Be sure you made all upgrades provided by quad mates (some upgrades might be unavailable if you lack the resources required).

    Hold the Line
All other characters will now remain behind to hold the line against the Collectors (as Captain Kirrahe would say). This is easily the most complex section of the Suicide Mission's calculations for which Game Informer's graph is an invaluable resource for determining Point values, who can live or die, and what the death pecking order is.

Essentially, whether a squad member lives or dies is determined by an average Point value determined on who makes up the group, and whether or not they are loyal. Here are the base Point values of your Squad Mates:

    4 Points: Grunt, Zaeed, Garrus
2 Points: Thane, Legion, Jacob, Miranda, Samara / Morinth
1 Point: Jack, Kasumi, Tali, Mordin
If any squad member is not Loyal, their point value is reduced by 1.
The average number of Points the team has will determine how many of them die. If the average is above 2, everyone on the team will live. Anything below that will risk up to three party members dying.
  • @reidrobot IIRC the difficulty you're playing on has something to say. Been a while. I recently did that mission on 'hardcore'. All upgrades were made. Everyone are loyal. I sent Kasumi in the vents. Garrus lead the 2nd team both times. Used Jack as Biotic shield. Mordin went home with the crew as he's the weakest defender afaik. For the final fight I brought Garrus and Kasumi. Nobody died. Could it have something to do with how long it takes you to clear the final boss?

I'd recommend, if you have, go back to a save before you launched through the relay and just try again. However it doesnt seem like you're doing anything wrong.

You did keep the loyalty of your team members by making the speech checks, right?  You can do the loyalty missions and then lose a loyalty if you fail the check, which MAY be influencing the outcome here.

@Ironbeak95 I’m not sure. I usually clear the human reaper bit really quickly by using the adrenaline. I’m playing on normal. I did as you suggested and got the same result.

    @reidrobot

Then the most likely explanation would be that there some flags who are set wrongly in your savegame.

@holger1405 I downloaded the save editor to check the flags, what should I look for? I have never used it before or any mods for that matter.

Open the Save Editor > Open > Select your ME2 Save file (Preferable the last one before you go to the Suicide Mission) > OK

Click on the "Plot" tab > click on the "Crew" tab > expand the Squad mates.

Look if "xxxx is loyal" is selected.

Did you tried to repair the game?

(Origin > Game Library > right click MELE > Repair)
(Steam > Game Library > right click at MELE > Properties > Local Files > Verify integrity of game files.)

  • @reidrobotseems very odd to me. I just ran through it on a character and everyone survived like normal. Just out of curiosity, did you upgrade every single squad member, even the powers/weapons including legion's?

Also, in the cutscene where you talk with those holding the line, one on your side will get shot and go down regardless, but they actually survive. I saw you mention someone dying on 'hold the line', but in your orignal comment you say it happen after the reaper fight. Just thought I'd mention the 'hold the line' bit

This does not affect survival rate. You also previously mentioned the difficulty setting, which also doesn't affect it.

The flow chart contains all the relevant variables. If someone dies despite following the guide, then there has to be a bug or something was overlooked.

Edit: I previously credited Pacifien for the flow chart. I believe she figured out the logic of the suicide mission, but there were other contributors as well. I don't know who exactly, and with the closure of the old forum, it's harder to figure that out.

  • The link @Fred_vdp posted where he linked it to Pacifen's Flow Chart is awesome!

Try this; I read where you tried using a save game editor to see the flags for loyalty and you stated they all were loyal. You stated you chose the proper squadmates for their specific roles where everyone *is supposed* to survive until the end. Just go through the scene after the SM with the Illusive Man and the actual ending where you stop the credit roll and go back to continue the game (not Main Menu) & make a another save (don't overwrite previous savs).

Now open it in the save game editor & load the newest save after the suicide mission and look at the flags. All are still loyal excopt the dead one? Did you follow the flow chart?

If one is dead, then make a copy of the last auto-save in the suicide mission. This save is made when the human reaper battle happens. If you don't have it, then you have go there again to have the game re-create it. Take that copy and open it in the SGE and look at those flags again. If one is not loyal, you could change it. If you're trying for the achievment, that may work (I really don't know, just thinking here). If you're trying to carry-over everyone into ME3, just take the after game save, change everyone to having made it through the SM and use that to import it into ME3.

  • Thank you everyone for your time and effort in trying to help me in this. I finally did it, Legion looked like he died but actually didn't. I changed some values in the save file with the editor, but I'm not sure if this worked or if I was being a fool the other times when I rage-quitted.

    Things I have learned:

    • If in doubt check your save file with the save game editor and compare against a previous playthrough (if you have one)
    • Do an idiot check to make sure you're not being an idiot
