"Well overall us straight gals are generally a little more polite and less raging. Also less vocal in general but maybe it's time we upped our game on that to be heard, I'd rather not though.
Just because we don't rage as much, or flip our lids, doesn't mean we feel any less cheated on the romance front.
I also totally agree - everyone has different character preference- make all the romances equal. Then everyone gets what they want and the char they want with a equally fullfilling romance."
Thats it, I think. When Girls / Ladies play the game and if there is something we don't like, we tend to do nothing. ☹️ We don't write angry letters to Bioware / EA, we don't go into a forum .... Bioware could have the impression there are no females playing this game. I have no other explanation why they gave us sutch horrible romance options, with sutch ugly humans / alien.
After DA:I there have been a lot of girls who wanted to start playing SF Bioware games like Mass Effect Andromeda. I don't understand why Bioware dit not take the chance?
(Sorry, I hate the romances in MEA: Horrible, ugly guys and short un-inspired romances. Just my personal opinion! I don't want to insult somebody.)
And have you seen what further plans they have for patches / DLC's? They want to make the Romances for the male Ryder (!!) better and give them more possibilitys. Just great! I fell so ... important .... Thanks Bioware.
The notes when I read them said the male romance options for male ryder was going to be looked at - trust me, they have it the worst, straight females come second on that front. Im glad they are looking at the m/m romances, someone needed to.
I also remain hopeful they will do the same for us.
"Girls" like me started playing BW games long before DAI. Get attached to BW when I did my first NWN run. Admired my Revan, felt in love with Jade Empire. Died when my Shep died. Maybe not the longest history but a history in gaming. My first PC game ever was Drakan and since then I'm hooked to PC gaming.
The problem is that we tent to be quiet. Why so? I guess it has a lot to do that there were times when we raised our voice we were told to shut up because we are a minority or feminists or SJW or whatever insult was on the "in" list. And I have to admit I am surprised how civilized a discussion like this is handled in this forum. Actually I was expecting worse and believe me, I know what I'm talking about, I had a lot of "funny" moments in other forums.
Back to the topic. It is hard to make everyone happy. And it's also hard to write a good romance story that makes everyone happy. What one might like will be too cheesy for another. Would have Evfra been a better romance? Probably, maybe. Is Gil a bad romance and is Dorian written so much better? Probably because Dorian is a main char in DAI. That doesn't mean there aren't people who enjoy a romance with Gil. See, I know I have to romance Liam in one of my playthroughs to get my trophy but honestly he's not "my" kind of guy. That's ok, it's like in RL. I don't have to like everone and that's perfectly fine. Diversity. And more believable than NPCs who are everybody's darling.
Is everyone ugly? I don't know, I think they are "believeable" good looking. And for me it's more important that someone has a interesting nature or charisma. That attracts me more than a nice face. I wouldn't date an a..hole just because he looks handsome. But that's just MHO of course.
What I don't like is that we have a class system. "Good" and "unimportant" romances you could call it. Everyone should have the same quality in story, cinematics. No matter if it's a m/f, a f/m, a f/f or a m/m romance. No matter if it's a "main" NPC or not. BW offers them as romance so BW should tread them equaly. Certainly it's matter of budget, time and development but well, then make less but make it worthwhile and good. Give me the feeling this is something important and growing, not just the typical one night stand before the great showdown. I love BW for giving us romances and I'm thankful but it needs more work. And if that's not possible then ok, no romances at all. It would be sad but better without it than with exactly the same "running gag" in every game.
There's actually a good chance I wouldn't play these games without the romances in them - not anymore.
Ever since my first, which for me was KOTOR I can't play rpgs that don't give me a female protag to play and a romance. Well other than diablo whoch is a mix rpg / dungeon crawling which Ive played since the first one. Romances just add that extra that I love and enjoy writing fanfic for.
I liked Shep, but Kaidan made me love her and feel invested in what happened to her, because she had someone who cared back.
I was also never an fps fan. The rpg elements of mass effect + the characters and romances made me play the games start to end and learn to fps. Before that I was more adventure games (like Riven, Myst, Sam and Max, Day of the Tentical etc) and strategies like Master of Orion 2, Age of Empires, Civilization and also games like The Sims and Creatures.
I was always a sci fi fan at least, so ME did have that appeal as well. Was never a fantasy fan though and yet the RPG elements and romances also drew me to the dragon age games. I very much enjoy them, although probably not as much as ME with its sci fi setting.
Anyhow the point being for me, the romances are a big part of the story and my characters, which is one of the reasons why it's exceptionally disappointing when they don't get the attention they should or could.
I guess you could say, im very much a girl when it comes to the games I play more than a 'gamer'.
Thats just it though, this is what the bioware games do - attract a much larger audience due to the uniqueness they provide with story and romances. Sometimes though, with mass effect it feels as if they are concentrating more on the elements other games have that are 'popular' which there is already dozens of and less o what makes it unique and I would rather they go the other way. Put more focus on that which makes these games unique.
Dragon Age still has it. But they never added MP. I can't help but feel MP has taken up too much of the story resources to keep them as good as they were, noticed in ME3 and now in Andromeda with certain aspects feeling rushed and unpolished.
Nothing in inquisition felt unpolished. Nothing in ME2 or 1 felt unpolished. The only thing different to them and me3/andromeda is MP. Draining resources from the story and chars?
