Saved game limit (PC)?

So I noticed tonight (Fri, 5/5) that my saved games weren't actually saving.  I hadn't played since Monday, 5/1, and my saves weren't recorded, even though I had the option to save and the little save arrow in the lower right side of the screen showed.  All I was seeing were auto saves.  So I deleted about 20-30 of my old saves from a month or so ago, then saved the game, and it showed the save with todays date.  Don't know how many saves I actually have, but it appears that there is a limit, at least on the PC.  This is not a big deal to me, as previous ME games had a save limit.   It just seems odd that the "save game" option was there to click instead of being "greyed out" so that I knew that I had reached my limit of saves and needed to delete some older saves.

Afaik, there is a lmit of 500 saves (plenty in my opinion), which is odd for PC platform. No idea why such a limit exists.

  • You're right about the 500 save game limit (which is more than enough, and way more than in previous ME games), I just checked my save folder and I have 485 save files (that's after deleting 20-30 last night and saving some more as I played).  I have no problem with the limit, it just seemed odd that the "save game" option wasn't greyed out so I would know that I reached my limit.  I had no idea that I'd saved over 500 times.  That wouldn't have happened if there was a "quick save" option that gets over-ridden each time.

my guess is that the 500 saves limit is a holdover from the console versions.

  • The save limit is likely due to the fact that the game uses cloud saves. They likely limit the total save number to reduce the amount of cloud storage needed for everyones saves and for bandwidth reasons when uploading/downloading saves.

The annoying thing I have noticed is that this game creates a ridiculous amount of auto saves.. but only when you can save yourself.

If you're in a mission where autosaves are your only option.. they never save. If you have the ability to save yourself, you'll get an autosave every 30 seconds.

I really love ME:A but the save system drives me nuts. Between the horrible inconsistency in autosaves and the ridiculous idea to not allow saving in story missions, I really wonder what they were thinking when they designed this system.

Personally.. I keep 3 manual saves per character. Before I exit the game, I go to the 'Load Save' screen and delete all but the newest autosave and then I exit. I just do this to keep things clean, and because I don't need 10 autosaves that are all 25 seconds apart.

Just checked myself. Two playthroughs (180 hours), nearing the end on the second one (heading to Meridian next) and have 176 save files in local folder total. I have not deliberately deleted any saves, and create manual saves maybe once per hour depending on what I'm doing (exploring vs missions).

No where near 500, so I'm good so far.

@DarthLlama And you're propably right with Cloud being the limiting factor
