[Spoilers] The Lost Song - Am I Missing Something Here?

This mission is obtained by talking to two Angaran researchers outside of Techiix.  After speaking with them you will embark on a mission to stop poachers from killing the yevara.

When speaking to them they will indicate that the yevara's songs can only be heard in recordings.  One of them theorizes that they may be remnant but there's no way to confirm that theory now as they are trapped below the ice.

This confuses me.  One, is it just me, or isn't that noise you hear while standing outside the base the "song" and not just a recording?

And the other thing I find confusing, if people are killing them, that means you can get to them and that means you can see if they're remnant or what have you.

Am I misunderstanding something, is there some plot holes going on, or a bit of both?

  • A bit.

You never get to see one, but it is implied it is a whale like creature in the oceans under the ice. Not remnant for sure as they are poaching them for food.

As far as the sound goes, it does sound like a whale song, but not directly confirmed it is the creature making it.

  • Both.

And it just get's weirder from there. The 'wait, listen to me' from the scientist pirate, Jaal punting it back to you, and the "solution" you arrive at doesn't straighten anything out either.

Going back to the questgiver at the end is either bugged/broken or I couldn't find the magic E convo spot... or they don't know where the game was going with it either.

I don't remember them being killed for food.  I remember them being killed for science so that an enzyme could be developed to recover faster from Kett weapon related injuries.

You can see them... sort of, under the ice at the base.

Regardless, my confusion is that they state that they can't confirm what they are due to an inability to reach them, but people are clearly reaching them.

You said both, so what am I missing/not understanding that will help this make more sense?

Jaal not being able to make a decision on this kind of makes sense to me.  He's emotional and on one hand the yevara are treasured by his people... however, killing them might help to save his people.  Jaal (and I'd suspect many of us) wouldn't want to be the one to make that call.

I just wonder if I am missing something that explains why they can't get to them but poachers can and how the song can only be heard via recording when I am pretty sure that is what we're hearing outside the base and through the ice.

  • You can both hear and see them. I suppose you could rationalize it by saying your SAM induced enhancements are allowing it where Angara cannot, but the scientist-pirates can clearly reach them.

Jaal not giving an opinion and passing the buck might make more sense if it was later in the game - when I hit the quest I was still the untrusted alien and he still was unsure he wasn't going to have to kill me in my sleep yet.

"...I suppose you could rationalize it by saying your SAM induced enhancements are allowing it where Angara cannot..."

That's good.  Sad that I don't think they (BioWare) thought of that but this would be a good explanation for that aspect.  The other thing, yeah.  Seems like a bit of a hole.

I mean these researchers are aware of the yevara being killed so they would know there had to be a way to get to them.

I'd guess that they either don't have the equipment to access them or don't feel that they can access them without harming them/driving them away like the poachers do.

Also, you may be hearing recordings from deep mics that the Angaran scientists are listening to

You do get to see them though - albeit not clearly.  Angry Joes revies had the same complaint and I rolled my eyes - if you look at the ice in that general area, you can see them swimming by in the water.

They look like giant squids dotted with lights - of course it's hard to make out more than that because of the ice.  But still, you CAN see them.
