I prefer that it was more of a narrator than a participant in the story. To me, it fit well that SAM didn't have much personality. I think that it is 'too big' to have one personality.
Synthetics were done extremely well in ME1-3. It could even be argued that defining the rights of created beings was the core theme for the games. That is a lot for one (too big) Ai to live up to.
I think it would be an interesting exploration if SAM 'created' new Ai without permission. The implications and questions around 'synthetic reproduction' would become an extension of the ME1-3 "synthetics and morality" theme. SAMs child Ai could be given / linked to Ryder as a replacement while objections and suspicion lingered. It would be more interesting to see this smaller Ai develop a personality.
Lot of interesting ways they could go with SAM. Benefactor, theme, stand in or polar opposite for EDI, friend, foe, or symbiot... but I don't want the "bigness".☹️
At least for the first episode, SAM is more the protagonist than I am. I get to make some decisions and "drive"... but it is more than a little like sitting in Dad's lap and playing with the wheel. I'm okay with SAM being dad's favorite out of the three of us - but I want to play *me* in the game instead of SAM by proxy.

Being "the Rookie" sort of the whole premise for Ryder, so I kind'a get it.
I do agree, it could have been better handled. At the very least SAM is "cheat notes", which makes Ryder seems less spectacular. I hate to compare, but with Shepard you really felt like you made a hero after ME1 (and Legend by the end ME3). Ryder feels like a kid to me - and SAM is a part of why.
I don't think that giving SAM more personality is the answer it would diminish Ryder's value even further.
Oddly enough, there were also times when SAM should have been giving tactical advice and he was silent. For example, when I took down my first Archiect, Cora was telling me what to do. It seemed so totally out of place. How does she know what to do? I understand that there needs to be gameplay hints along the way - that's the ideal purpose for SAM. He can tell Ryder that there are mining locations, but can't scan a big enemy boss for week points?
I hope that ME:A2 does some work on SAMs 'Size' and purpose. If they decide that he is a "character" they best separate him from Ryder.

I'm new, I am not ready, I'm with you there and also okay with that. The only respect I get until the very end of the game, and the only reason I'm even given a chance in the first place, is SAM. I can even work with that. I don't even mind SAM can do some really slick things - but after a while busting out the new SAM fix for whatever problem there is starts looking like Deux ex Machina to me. While I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, the game could let me stumble around a little and try things before SAM (or anybody else) jumps in with a solution. Lots and lots of being led by the nose.
Unless we jump twins, or they kill me off for good, I don't see how they could let me be my own person. If I'm stuck with SAM in my head it could at least develop a personality.
