VERY LOW FPS MASS EFFECT 1

So, I bought the ME trilogy a few days ago, and am a couple hours in when I notice horrible framerate in most areas of the ME1 game outside of cinematics and dialogue, this confuses me because I have a pretty nice laptop which can run most MODERN games on high at 60 FPS:

12gb RAM

Nvidia GeForce 2gb VRAM

i7 2.7ghz Processor

WIndows 8 64  bit

1TB HDD

Why cant I run this game well???

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

My graphics card is a nvidia geforce 840m, I am playing through origin. I can run Ghost recon phantoms on gigh at nearly 50 FPS bu this game can barely hit 30. I just don't get it...

I tried using gamebooster on/off, didn't change anything. I used ccleaner, but that didn't help. I reinstalled and updated all drivers, I get 60 on borderlands maxed out 40-50 on GRP high, 60+ on CS GO maxed out, 120+ FPS on TF2 max, on skyrim I get around 30-40 maxed in its vanilla state. I can even run Hawken on high while getting a good 30-40 FPS. Mass effect is weird though, even on low, I get $#!TTY FPS on high the FPS stays the same but the textures look really terrible/pixelated for some reason. I just don't get why I can't run a game from 2007, but I can go crazy with my graphics settings on most modern titles. Not sure if any of this info helps...

The other titles you mentioned (Skyrim, Borderlands, TF2, CS:GO) are not at all demanding titles. I can imagine that your GPU can handle those games fairly well.

I find it hard to place that GPU on the scale of minimum to recommended specs. It has a much faster clock than the Geforce 6800 GT (the minimum card), but lower memory bandwidth. I'm not sure what the game performances should be like, but I think it should run it better than the minimum GPU. I've played the game on worse.

If you haven't already, turn off the Origin in-game overlay. It's in the Origin preferences. The overlay can serevery reduce performance, si always have it disabled in any game I play.

I tried this, and my FPS is still crazy. I get anywhere from 6 to 35, but 22 on average. Anything else I could try?

    *EDIT

I put all settings on low, and even dropped my res from 1920x1080 to 1680x1050, and FPS was still terrible. I don't have anything running in the background, and I haven't had any trouble playing other games today, (GRP and Space Engineers) I know most of these games are low demanding, but shouldnt ME1 be the same way??? I mean it was released in 2007, and like I said, most games don't give me trouble on max settings.

There's one very specific issues I had once, and the chances are low that you have it as well, but I'll tell you anyway.

I use the tweaks to enable surrounds sound and environmental audio (which  have described in a sticky thread). This resulted in frame drops for me, because while I had a supported sound card with EAX, it was software emulated, which put more strain on my CPU. So if you have hardware audio enabled, disable it and see if that changes anything.

Another possible issue is an incompatibility with recent Nvidia drivers. I've had issues like that a lot when I still had a Geforce card. You should try installing an older driver version.

Thanks, I'll try this and let you know how it works!
