What's the point in using profiles?

I think it's not really a problem in itself when you have an absolute favorite, but it could be if you are simply not encouraged or interested in changing anything, as if all remaining alternatives are simply too much worse or there's some hindering issue that makes it all pointless.
I also played all my first play-through using the same 3 skills and an Explorer Profile. But when I tried to change to see how something would work, there was all this ... ritual only to find the favorite menu, stopping everything on its tracks. Then there was this cd.
This is another mechanic which needs some rework. I believe Favorites and Profiles must be intertwined somehow, working fast and tweaking about our allotted abilities, more than 3, perhaps more. Although I got some ideas on that subject, I'm sort of discouraged at proposing anything on a forum like this one, where we are never certain we are wasting our time.
