More mechanic points means more possible tuning upgrades and therefore more chance of competing in BRR.
As for the demo idea, that's just a different business model. It may work sure, but in this case EA have clearly decided this current method of buying gold is more lucrative for them.
I think you might be in the minority if you're saying you'd prefer to spend a lump sum to open up certain parts of the game. The Devs are already a bit borderline when they come to claiming this game is free to play but technically there isn't anything that is exclusive to paying players. As soon as half the game requires actual money to access, you're going to lose a significant chunk of your player base.
