How do I get my PS5 controller to work for Need for Speed?

I'm using a PS5 controller and I want to use the button mapping that old NFS games had on PS2, but rebinding the buttons does not actually put functions I rebind on the buttons I rebind them to.

Why is this game such a complete * mess?
