My Vision for the Future of Need for Speed – Bringing Back the Arcade Identity

Need for Speed does not need to become another Forza or Gran Turismo. It needs to become Need for Speed again.

I own almost all of the Need for Speed games, and I am a huge fan of the series. I am writing this message because I believe there is a huge opportunity for this type of game, and that the unique qualities that made Need for Speed special could allow it to surpass the combined sales and popularity of games such as Forza and Gran Turismo.
I currently play the older Need for Speed games regularly because they have amazing features and a unique sense of fun that I simply cannot find in other racing games. By the way, I also own the latest Forza games, both Forza Horizon and Forza Motorsport, which I see as alternatives to Gran Turismo.
And yet, I remain addicted to the older Need for Speed games, especially Hot Pursuit, High Stakes, and Most Wanted.
I believe I have identified one of the secrets behind the success of platforms such as TikTok in capturing people's attention. It can be summarized in just two things: Speed and something new.
I will summarize my ideas below. If you combine them into a single game, I genuinely believe you could create one of the best racing games ever made, with enormous sales that could continue for many years.
What is surprising is that none of these ideas are completely new. Almost all of them already existed in previous Need for Speed games.
Simply bring back the original identity of the series: an arcade racing game.
Move away from realism, ultra-high-end graphics, and realistic driving physics like Forza and Gran Turismo. Need for Speed has something that can make younger players become completely addicted to the game, something that other racing games do not offer.

All you need to do is bring those elements together into one game:

  1. The Sense of Speed
    The feeling of extreme speed is incredibly exciting.
    I am not talking simply about owning a fast car. I mean the actual sensation of speed, created through the design of the roads, the environment, the camera, and the gameplay itself.
    This feeling is almost completely absent from the newer Need for Speed games.
    Simply take the approach used in Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered especially the road design, gameplay style, and incredible sense of speed and combine it with elements from Most Wanted.
  2. The Driving Controls
    The controls are one of the biggest secrets to making a racing game incredibly fun.
    Most modern racing games have lost this feeling of pure fun.
    I do not want complete, realistic control over the car. This is an arcade game.
    I want the game to understand what I am trying to do and help execute it in a spectacular and satisfying way.
    Dodging traffic, performing a drift, accelerating at extreme speeds with nitrous all of these things create an incredible feeling of excitement.
    Please make the handling much closer to Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Hot Pursuit, rather than the newer Need for Speed games.
  3. Variety and Exciting Gameplay Ideas
    Having many different gameplay ideas is what prevents me from ever getting bored.
    I love playing as a police officer, and I love playing as a racer.
    I love having police cars and traffic that I have to avoid. It is incredibly fun.
    But what makes it even more exciting is what I can actually do with the car in both situations setting up roadblocks, destroying police vehicles, escaping from the police, and so on.
    In short, take everything related to police chases from Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and bring it back.
  4. The Camera
    I do not want the car to occupy most of the screen with every tiny detail visible while the road fills the rest.
    I want a more distant camera that allows me to see the road and the environment around it.
    I want to feel like I am living inside the world of the game, not simply driving a car on a road.
    The game world itself could become one of the biggest reasons for the game's success and uniqueness.
  5. Career Mode and Progression
    There is absolutely no need for a complicated story.
    Instead, bring back a career system similar to Hot Pursuit, including its progression and reward structure.
    However, I do not think the rewards should primarily be money used to buy cars.
    There is no need for an economy system at all.
    Instead, progression should unlock new cars and new roads.
    At the beginning, I should have a very limited number of cars and tracks. As I progress through the career, more cars and roads become available.
    Once I unlock a car, I should be able to use it whenever I want outside of Career Mode.
    This could work similarly to Need for Speed: High Stakes.
    And there is another important idea that could make young players extremely addicted to the game, which brings me to the next point.
  6. Maps Multiple Maps, Not One Giant Open World
    Yes, maps, not one giant map.
    We do not need the biggest possible open-world map.
    Need for Speed is not GTA.
    In my opinion, making a racing game into a giant open world can actually hurt the experience.
    Instead, create many different roads and environments, with every road having its own identity and atmosphere.
    Each one could feel as if it came from a different country or it could be completely fictional.
    It does not even have to be realistic.
    Imagine a road inspired by outer space, another one on another planet, another one through a futuristic city, another through mountains, another through a desert, and so on.
    Let the player choose the map, just like in Need for Speed: High Stakes and the older Need for Speed games.
    And please do not forget shortcuts!
  7. The Environments Behind the Roads
    Please pay extremely close attention to the world surrounding the road.
    I do not want every computer resource and every bit of GPU power to be spent on extremely detailed, static scenery.
    Instead, use those resources to make the game fun and alive.
    Give me interesting, eye-catching, moving elements rather than simply high-resolution static scenery.
    Even better, make those environmental elements affect the race itself.
    For example:
    * Water puddles
    * Snow
    * Construction zones
    * Changing road conditions
    * Obstacles
    * Moving objects
    * Environmental events
    The approach used in Need for Speed: High Stakes would be a great reference for this.
  8. Time of Day + Weather
    Combine time of day with weather.
    The same map could be played:
    * During the day
    * In the afternoon
    * At sunset
    * At night, with the environment becoming completely dark
    And the player could choose the weather:
    * Clear weather
    * Rain
    * Snow
    This means that the same map could feel completely different every time I play it.
    I would never get bored of it.
  9. Bring Back Post-Race Replays
    Please bring back the replay system after every race.
    This alone could effectively double the amount of enjoyment players get from the game.
    After an intense race, the replay becomes a moment to relax and watch what I just accomplished from a cinematic perspective.
    Use cameras positioned around the road, cameras following the car, different cinematic angles, and let the player choose between them.
    Do it just like Need for Speed: High Stakes.
    Allow players to save their replays and watch them later.
    I remember spending my free time watching replays of races I had played.
    And if the environments are beautiful, distinctive, and entertaining as they were in High Stakes watching these races becomes an experience by itself.
  10. cockpit view
    Bring back an interior camera similar to Need for Speed: High Stakes, while using the excellent work you previously did with Need for Speed: Shift.
    You could simply take the quality of the interiors from Shift without adding unnecessary details that consume excessive computer resources.
    Let the player choose whether to use this camera.
    I know that other racing games already have cockpit views.
    But imagine the difference when the player finds themselves inside a car, driving through a beautiful and highly attractive environment filled with imaginativeness necessarily realistic elements, unique lighting, moving objects everywhere, and police cars chasing them.
    That is a completely different experience.
    It could make players prefer Need for Speed over other racing games.
  11. Offline and Online Multiplayer
    Let me play completely offline whenever I want.
    I should be able to choose my car and my road and simply play.
    At the same time, provide an online mode where I can play with friends by joining a lobby, similar to MECCHA CHAMELEON, or create my own lobby.
    The host could choose the map and the car class, and everyone would compete under the same conditions.
    And once again:
    Please stay away from the idea of a giant open world. It can become a trap for racing games.
  12. Continuous Updates
    Imagine a new update introducing:
    * New cars
    * New roads
    * New environments
    * New gameplay ideas
    * New weather conditions
    * New events
    These could gradually appear as players progress through the game.
    You could also use AI to help generate and develop new ideas, design new environments, and create combinations of fictional and realistic cars.
    This could make the number of possible cars, environments, and gameplay experiences virtually endless.
    And the game would continue growing through updates.
    This could make the game extremely addictive because every time I open it, I could discover something new and exciting to play.
    I could also encounter players I have never met before, while still being able to add and play with my friends.
    This could help Need for Speed dominate platforms such as Twitch, because streamers would constantly want to play the newest, most beautiful, and most exciting maps to attract viewers.
    As the game becomes more popular, you could eventually organize tournaments.
    Yes, I genuinely believe this is possible if these ideas are implemented correctly.
  13. Why I Believe in This
    By the way, I actually bought Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered after watching a streamer play it.
    I was amazed by the beauty of the environments and how much fun the gameplay was.
    It created an incredibly high level of energy and excitement that I simply do not get from other racing games.
    And I experienced that excitement even though it was a remastered version of an old game.
    That is why I am asking you to do something very simple
    Take Hot Pursuit as the foundation, combine it with the best ideas from High Stakes and Most Wanted, and then continue developing and updating it with new ideas.
  14. Freedom of Choice Through Progression
    I want freedom of choice when it comes to cars and maps, but with progression-based restrictions.
    I should be motivated to keep playingnot simply to finish the game, because the game should never really end.
    Instead, I should keep playing because I want to unlock more cars and more maps.
    The driving experience should have the fun and handling of Most Wanted, combined with the police chase mechanics of Hot Pursuit.
  15. The Sound Track
    And finally, the music.
    Simply choose music that creates the desire to play and enhances the feeling of speed.
    Fast-paced trance or techno music would be perfect.
    You could also create completely new music or work with artists such as Johnny L on SoundCloud to create fast paced tracks specifically for the game.

*In Summary*
Everything I am asking from the developers and designers is essentially this:
"Bring the classic Need for Speed games back together"
Redesign them, combine their best ideas, and turn them into one game.
Use Most Wanted as the foundation for the handling and sense of speed.
Use Hot Pursuit for everything related to police chases.
Use High Stakes as inspiration for the maps and progression system instead of an open world.
Bring back all the ideas that were abandoned over the years and that, in my opinion, contributed to the decline of the series.
If you look at the series, you can see that it began losing its identity when many of these ideas disappeared from later games.
The concept of the game should be extremely simple:
Race against other cars to finish first, avoid traffic, and defeat or escape the police not in a realistic open world, but on a road from Point A to Point B where every element is designed to maximize excitement and fun, even when it is completely unrealistic.

Any game can fail and eventually disappear.
But I genuinely believe Need for Speed has the potential to remain at the top for many years because it can create a level of excitement and enjoyment that other racing games simply do not provide.
And even the newer Need for Speed games are not fully delivering that feeling.
All you need to do is focus on these core ideas and use modern technology, including AI, to keep the experience fresh, surprising, and exciting.
You already own a treasure: the Need for Speed name.
All you have to do is bring back the identity that made it special: An arcade racing game.
I want to see Need for Speed become a consistently successful franchise like FIFA and I believe it could become even more successful if some of these ideas were implemented.

And please remember: At the end of the day, we need a game is something we play to escape from the reality we live in and enter a world that is more exciting and enjoyable not simply another version of reality.
You are a company capable of making this happen.
That is why I am writing this message.
Thank you for taking the time to read my ideas.

I would genuinely love to hear what the Need for Speed team thinks about this vision.

A passionate Need for Speed fan
