Need for Speed Shift won't launch

I have Need for Speed Shift purchased from Steam, and it started properly quite a few times, then when I switched to a 4:3 monitor, the game will no longer start. A black screen pops up, then the game crashes immediately. Switching back to the 16:9 monitor is not an option. My PC meets the minimum requirements for the game. Any tips?

    It sounds like the game's trying to load the wrong resolution/aspect ratio and crashing from it. 

    If you go yourusername\Documents\NFS SHIFT\, you can see the config files. Be sure to make a backup to desktop first, then delete the local config files. The game should create a new one when it starts next, hopefully this time with the proper aspect ratio/resolution.
