NFS MW 2012 stops responding to any keyboard commands when trying to switch cars

I just got the game and was going fine with the tutorial. Until, I got to the Porsche 911 Carrera S. When it tells me to press "enter" to switch to it, the game just brings up the pause menu, and stays there. nothing on the keyboard gets rid of it. I'm stuck here and cant progress further no matter how many time I close and re enter the game. Can someone please help?
