NFS Rivals Pavement turns to sand or bare dirt and then car gets stuck, game freezes.

This has been happening occasionally, but still is happening. My system is a I7, 6 gigs ram, Win 7 Ult. 64 bit, GTX 260 896 mb ram, all settings on lowest.

I will be driving along and suddenly the road ahead turns from pavement to barren desert and when the car drives into this area, where previously the pavement should be (and now is sand or barren desert) the car gets stuck and will not resovle itself no matter how long I wait or what controls I try using. The only way is to start task manager and end Rivals game. It seems to happen mostly if other player are entering into my screen area and they too are stuck. The other nite two other players came into my screen area and all three of us were stuck, frozen in place, with the road in my area turned to sand or barren desert. I know I need a better video card but until that happens I'm wondering if this issue has anything to do with my weak card. But would it involve getting the other players stuck as well on their systems, or is it just my system where they appear to be stuck(?) and in reality they just keep driving along?

Makes me wonder though because there have been times when my car is frozen in this sand where pavement should be and I see another player that was stuck there before I drove into it and after a while I see that he leaves the game in order to get unstuck and his car dissappears. Once I came upon this phenomena with the road ahead sliced as if it were and the pavement gone and I reacted fast enough not to drive into it and retain control of my car. I could however see another player out there in the sand stuck.  I don't remember if I drove away from it and continued playing or not.

Thank you,

Well, this is an edit of the post I made below. The solution I thought was found only worked for a couple days and now back to the same problem all over again.

When driving along there will be a portion of the pavement sliced away and bare dirt where pavement should be. Also turns out that the game is near crashing and unable to drive in another direction for only short distance before the same is encountered. At the same time if I use the Escape key the game crashes and does not respond.

Opened tickets with Game Advisor and have ongoing communication with them but still unresolved as of 3-12-2014. Updated Nvidia Drivers to most recently released yesterday hoping that would solve the issue. Failed.

So, solution not found. Despite what I wrote below.

Ok, Solution finally found. I am the original poster of this thread. Game was saved onto my D drive as my C is 60gig SSD. Game advisor said they will not service problems/issues unless game is installed on C. Reluctantly I moved Rivals and Origin and MW, the games I play the most, to my small C drive.

Rivals now runs almost flawlessly and so much better than ever b4. After about 10 hours of playing I've only experienced this freezing issue twice, compared to every time I played the game previously.

Origin has to be on same drive as Rivals. I told game advisor that all my other games were on my D and would Origin find them ok. He said yes, np. Well, that turned out not to be true at all. I also had to move MW to C. don't really have room on that little SSD anymore, just a few gigs. So, rest of my games are in limbo until I get a bigger C and go through the whole OS install and all that.

But, for now Rivals is a blast and runs great.

I just did a quick search on the net for turning off VSync. If you have an AMD video card here is a link for the instructions:

    http://www.ehow.com/how_8563116_turn-vsync-off-vista-ati.html

My system has 2 EVGA GTX 760s in SLI which is Nvidia. I'll turn off Vsync today and see what happens in game. I found VSync this way in Nvidia:

Right click the green Nvidia icon on the far right of task bar under programs that are running in background. This is near the volume and clock icons.

If you don't see it there click on the Up Arrow to "Show Hidden Icons" and from the list find Nvidia Settings and to the right there is a box where you can choose "Show icon and notifications" and this will bring the icon up in task bar

Open Control Panel, not Geforce Experience

Under manage 3D settings/Global Settings you will find a list and VSync is at the bottom of the list.

Click on VSync and this will bring up a menu to the right of VSync.

Default is "Use 3D Application Setting"

Click on the down arrow and highlight "Off".

I haven't tried it yet. Will be interesting to see if this helps.

  • Well after a few hours of testing myself on this, I have found something strange, seems that when I set "Matchmaking Settings" to Private in the "ALL DRIVE SETTINGS" apply and do a search so I am now the leader.  I go in and try racing in the area that I was having the problem it seems to go away.

I have done the same race over and over for the last 4 hours and all seems good.  Now if I set the Matchmaking Settings back to Public then apply and search for a game and join someone elses game.  Then try the same race the problem returns where the pavement ends.  At first I was thinking it was my computer, but now that it seems to only do it when someone else is the host seems might be related to the public server stuff.

I am going to try changing it back and making myself the host again and then making my game public and see if I have the problem when I am the host.

    My system specs are:

    AMD quad core 2.8GHz 64bit

    8GB RAM

    nVidia GTX 750 2GB

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit SP1 (with all updates installed)

ok. did it to me while I was hosting.
I'm out of ideas. Might have to play it on 32bit version :\

I've noticed that it only happens when you are in a Public Game and when some other player is close by from the AllDrive system. I've had it happen to me the last 2 days now. It was working fine before and wasn't a common issue, but the last 2 days were a headache. I had to close the game and restart it all over again and still happens. I am guessing thier servers are having a problem same as the need for speed network website.

Well so far it seems as long as I am the host of the session I haven't had any problems.  There were two real people as cops waiting for me near the area I normally had the problem and the pavement was there.

So as long as I am the host of the session no problems.  If I join someone elses game is when I have the problem.

So at this point I guess have to make sure I force the game so I am the host or I just play private game so I can progress.

Though you are probably right could be the servers too as I have not been able to connect to network.needforspeed.com site since I got this game.

Unfortunately, EA/GHOST don't give a damn into fixing this issue. I have also been having it a lot of times lately. It's always at the same places on the map, and always only when I'm playing in public. I've tried to reinstall, mess with the configs, move the game folder, but nothing. To make it worse, with me the problem happens one of every two times I pass a "problem zone". I've lost to other racers as a cop because of this * problem. It's sad, since I love this game.

Yeah, I hear you. I used to love Rivals too. I put in so much time and devotion to the game I became NFSTimes.com player ranking #12. That is through perfecting events which greatly helped playing/racing throughout the entire map.The only player I found that could compete at the same level was a friend, Jhow who is player ranked #3. When you can use Turbo anywhere and everywhere on the map and know exactly where and when to employ it you become almost unbeatable. But i just don't care about Rivals anymore.

I've completely stopped playing Rivals. I built a new computer, added G27 wheel, and have been solely playing The Crew for a a few months now. To tell you how bad Rivals/EA is, I haven't even loaded Origin onto my new rig.

I used to drive around Rivals map and wish that I could just drive off the road and into the mountains and explore those areas but in Rivals you are so limited to where you can drive....you drive on those few streets and that's it.

Well, The Crew is awesome beyond description. The map/world is so vast you would have to combine all the maps for all the NFS games onto one map and you would still only have a tiny fraction of the map in The Crew. I have a few hundred hours of playing The Crew and have yet to see the whole map. I think it might take a year before I see it all. That may be an exaggeration, but trust me, the world map is enormous and so fun to explore or race. Now that I think of it, look, the cars fall into 5 categories, Full Stock, Street, Dirt, Performance, Raid and Circuit. There are several actual Circuit tracks (like Laguna Seca) scattered within The Crew also. There is so much in this game...its amazing.

It is so strange....reviews on The Crew are not all that great and kept me from buying it for a few months. The Crew sets a new standard in the industry that is so far beyond what all the other game companies are doing and have done. I think that's why EA didn't release anything new in 2014. I don't even know what their plans are for the next release. They will have to step way up to even come close to Ubisoft's The Crew.

With The Crew, my new computer and the G27 my gaming has never been so fun. There are events in The Crew that take 2 hours to complete. The map is the entire U.S. and there are absolutely no restrictions where you can drive, just turn off the road anywhere and explore, race, etc. I always used keyboard and became very proficient with it. Zero interest in that now. I can't even describe how much fun using the G27, the pedals and choice of stick shift, paddle shifting, or automatic trans is. I thought I was getting a great driving experience with the keyboard.....duh.....using your fingers to drive compared to actually having this setup....no comparison, the fun factor goes through the roof with G27.

You like off-road driving/racing? You can drive for hours on dirt roads and never drive the same road twice. The Crew doesn't crash. It actually plays for days and weeks without crashing the game. I think I get about 1 game crash per month.

Yeah, with Rivals I got used to rebooting the computer sometimes every 10 minutes, and 5-6 times per hour. 45 minutes of crash free gaming became something to relish.

To be honest though, it may have been computer hardware that caused Rivals to crash. I thought I had a pretty powerful rig but the technology was a few years behind. My old rig was i7 930, 10 gigs ram, 60 gig SSD C drive, 1 tb D drive, 2 GTX 760s in SLI. But I don't even care anymore to see how Rivals plays with my new rig...I just have absolutely no interest in EA/Rivals/Most Wanted 2012 anymore.

The longest race in Rivals is Grand Tour and that takes around 8-9 minutes.......how boring. I can't say enough about The Crew. I purchased the Gold Edition for $89 and then spent about $30 more on what is called Crew Credits and that's all you need to spend. There is something called Perk Points that I used the extra Crew Credits on and purchased all the Perk Points available. That is a great tip if you are going to buy The Crew.

If you end up buying The Crew and want a few more tips write back to me. Look for me in The Crew....ShelbyCobraSS

The solution that works for me is:

My Origin is installed in C:, while the game folder is in another drive.

I had 3 issues with the game:

    1. car stop, game frozen, road turned into dirt.

    2. long loading time.

    3. unable to start event with "Page Up".

I read somewhere that Origin and game folder need to be in drive C.

I uninstalled NFS from drive X. Change game folder in Origin to C. Reinstalled NFS in C.

All 3 issues above are gone.

Happy playing the game now. Not sure why things happened the way they did, but they did!

(ps: i am pasting this reply in a few thread, the threads that I have read to find the solution to my issues above, to help others that may come upon any threads.)

  • The Abyss or disappearing roads leading to everything being static & soft lock crashed - For this issue go here C:\Users\YOURUSERACCOUNT\Documents\Ghost Games\Need for Speed(TM) Rivals\settings or whatever drive letter your my documents is in, open PROFILEOPTIONS_profile with a text editor (I use notepad++) & look for GstRender.MeshQuality

Mine was set to 1 & the cause of the textures not loading in & most problems, change that to 3; save the file.

Never ever had any problem with crashes or something else again. if u get a blackscreen on startup, or when the game connects, close the game and retry. also delete any fps delocks and keep the standard startup startsettings, in meaning DO NOT use -GameTime.MaxSimFps 60 and -GameTime.ForceSimRate 60.0. if everything works fine for u u can use the startup settings again
