They are still working out some bugs (i.e your lamp post scenario and such) As for hopping in to an already existing game, that's how 2015 ran as well. You essentially have to stay in the playlist so you are there when a fresh one starts. It's weird but this way it helps loading times & searching for games if it can just throw you in a lobby.
A ghosting idea is pretty cool especially if the rage of people smashing continues. A "Fair play" mode would be great.
