I had the issue of ignoring the story until well after I was level 50. A friend and I had just bought the game and wanted to race each other but once we found the story missions were single player we ended up avoiding them.
Did enjoy the story once I eventually ended up playing it but yeah just as things seemed to get going it came to an end and I was left wanting more.
On a side note playing the story missions at max level were hilariously easy and I found myself pushing the ai trying to get them to go faster through half the missions.
