The escape key in the pc version of nfs most wanted a criterion game is not working

 the first time we drive the car to the jack spot the game asks us to press num6 for driving the porsche. but the num6 key is not working .i tried to chenge the controls. but the escape key is also refusing to work. the game didnt crash. but its not responding to the keys.
