Yeah, since I think it's clear EA has moved Criterion away from Unbound, and we're likely not gonna get a hotfix anytime now (they might just even leave it unsolved until the next Volume update- if it even gonna happen), that leaves it to community fix.
Coincidentally, I thought about looking for one & to my surprise- a similar one made for Heat actually works for Unbound, based on this reddit post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/needforspeed/comments/178f07s/comment/k50ayzf/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3
I tried & it works like a charm. I can play normally again now (except that Linkups & Boosted Events still don't appear where I'm at. Likely gonna need a VPN & connect to NA/Netherlands/EU for that to work again now) but at least I can do stuff & race now. So hopefully it'll work for you guys as well.
Ok, so the steps are:
1) Make a backup of the whole Unbound folder in My Documents. Put the backup somewhere else.
2) Delete The Unbound folder in My Documents
3) Delete The shadercache folder in Unbound's install directory
4) Manage > Repair the game via EA app
5) Go offline via EA app (the three lines icon on the top left > go offline)
6) Download nfs_hits_cpu90_fix.cmd on here https://github.com/Octanium91/NFS_Heat_CPU_Load_FIX
7) Place nfs_hits_cpu90_fix.cmd in Unbound's install directory, run it & press any key on your keyboard so it can make a config file for your game using information about your processor, this will will enable the GPU to be utilized more & preventing your game from crashing due to overload on the CPU (which is the problem we're having).
8) Go offline and open the game, at the continue screen, exit game and see if an Unbound folder has been created in My Documents, if it has, insert the save you made a backup of from earlier and replace the newly created save (just the savegame folder is fine).
9) Go online via EA app with the same step you did to go offline
10) Launch the game normally. It'll work normally after this & you can just run Unbound as usual.
I'll go ahead & post a dedicated thread so more people with this issue can see, and hopefully fix things on their end as well.
