Even when this game is free it's still overpriced. Five hours of VS Online play and I'm done. Tired of being discriminated against online because of my location all the time. This is the WORST online gaming experience I've ever had in my life, and it's not my fault (just in case you wanted to troubleshoot my connection to save face)
Community ManagerThere's no discrimination. Online Versus uses a peer to peer connection. You're not on our servers. Either you or your opponent are the host. If you're in a less-populated area, chances are good you're connecting with someone far away. Which, of course, means a weaker connection. Hopefully, we'll have more dedicated servers in the future, but that would also mean you may have a worse connection unless the server is close to you.
I don't feel like gameplay is ever optimal for me here in the Northwoods of Wisconsin/Michigan area. Even though I seem to play on servers East of me I'm always stuck routing West before I get there. The routing for this game is so dumb for me, and it's been this way for as long as I remember being able to track my route (when I used a router that would do that)
I honestly think it's more a routing issue than it is a distance issue, because when I'm playing on actual servers in HUT I'm physically not that far away, but the route takes that weird route I was mentioning. Nobody wants to admit fault or offer a real solution though, so I'm just "stuck" for the most part.

I subscribed to EA play for one month just to try NHL23 (by the way, It’s my first time not buying the game since 97)
Obviously when you play online you at least need the ping to be like 20ms to 35ms. (or even lower)
But It’s very difficult to match up with another player and get a ping like that. Every time I play this game mode: before first period faceoff I press the “option button” and then the “rectangle button” (PS5 that is) to see the network status and every time the ping is like 50ms +
I have to repeat this maybe like up to 10 times before I finally get matched up with an opponent (an opponent probably living closer to my location) the ping is then usually around 35ms.
The online experience with this game mode is horrible!
Please pass this problem on to the development team. Get this game mode over on dedicated servers and adopt full crossplay to it as well.
Also, it feels like the more stuff, features, moves, etc, they try to do the greater the disparity becomes based SOLELY on your internet connection. That would explain why internet problems on the 360 were minimal, but with each new generation they have become more glaring and obvious. Maybe that's where EA needs to start looking because we all can't have perfect internet connections.
Community ManagerYour ISP is responsible for the routing. Matchmaking looks for the best possible match. If you're being routed to the west coast, your ping will be higher due to the distance.
Sooooooo, what's the solution then when my ISP wants to troubleshoot MY equipment when there's nothing wrong there, and that be the only solution they offer me? I mean I can't get less than 80ms on VS Online, and HUT is somewhere around 50ms, and this is an ALL the time thing.
shoulda been free from launch - this game is terrible

That's pretty normal if you're connecting to a server on the west coast. Online Versus games don't take place on our servers. Either you or your opponent are the host. If you want to go through some troubleshooting, let me know, but there isn't anything we can do about routing.
Actually, I'm not connecting to the West server according to my POS Netgear Netduma router. It located the server somewhere in Ohio maybe? when I was still using it. I'm back on the Asus router now because it just works better in general, but NOTHING works for this NHL series anymore. It doesn't matter what I do, and Spectrum is the ONLY player in town for internet.
What's peculiar is that when my players act slow, sluggish, weak, and stupid, and my controller input doesn't register in the game properly, are also the times I seem to be playing against players with a higher ranked skill level that have players that don't show ANY of these problems. The disparity between players seems to be caused directly by the internet connection, and it's hard to be competitive when the internet doesn't let you compete fairly. My thoughts always go back to the PS3/360 versions of the game and how the internet USUALLY didn't cause many problems aside from once in a blue moon.
Community ManagerConnection is going to vary between most everyone. There are a very high number of variables to take in to account. If you're not seeing any stuttering and it's just input delay, it's possible that could be related to your TV. Are you using Game Mode? Also, if you're on Xbox, make sure Dolby Vision for gaming is disabled. Something else to check is the HDMI cable. It should be a premium one.
